Thread: Balloon unleashed!

  1. #1

    Default Balloon unleashed!

A rather unique photo was taken over Cracow, Poland probably in 1919 during Polish-Soviet war.
An observation balloon broke free from soldiers' hands in one of the town's forts. A accidental flyer took a photo.
If you zoom in you will see ropes hanging underneath the gasbag..

The description says no. The soldiers were trying to replace just the gasbag from a fort to another place and due to their lack of competence it "escaped".

I love seeing the national insignia on the side here, Andy! Definitely one for a repaint for 1919-1920...

    All the best,
    Matt

Balloons, in fact, have a long history of doing things like this. But hey, nice find, Andrzej.

Very interesting. I love the fort down below. I hope it is still preserved.

You have raised an interesting question Peter.
Cracow has always been a fortified city. XIX century was the period of great fortification works and (if my search engine works well) there were about 40 different strongpoints and forts built around the city by Austro-Hungarian Army (Cracow was considered a Free City under A-H rule). Several of the bigger forts survived to this day, but I am not sure about the one in the picture.
During my colleage years in Cracow I visited some of them and it was a fantastic experience.

Neat photo! It would fit right in at the 94th there in Columbus.

I do wonder though, is this where Polish sausages came from??
