Working on 1916 Germans Fokkers E.IIIs, D.I and D.II. Then back to UK 1916.
As always outstanding work David
Not sure you need an airfield Dave - they didn't tend to be all that adjacent to CH stations - you might need a station area to set them on though.
This is the one just down the road from me on Pevensey marsh.

You can still see many of the buildingsand the tower bases exist today in Church Acre Drove.

Need one of these for calibration work....
MvR hypotheticals... I'll hopefully be getting an AEG G.II soon. I have a spare Fokker E.III. All I need is a Halberstadt D.V and an Albatros D.I, then a repaint of a D.V, and I can have all aircraft types MvR flew in in combat. AEG G.II, Roland C.I, Fokker E.III, Albatros D.I, II, III, V, Halberstadt D.V, Fokker Dr.I....
But what would have happened if MvR had merely been wounded, not killed, on his final flight? Obviously he'd get an early model Fokker D.VII, similar markings to his brother's. Then what - a D.VIII? That would suit his style, almost a faster Dr.I. Then perhaps a Pfalz D.XV into 1919?
Non-Wings/Sails: the Unholy Evil Black Rifle of Doom slowly continues to have parts and tools trickle in... have a week to swing the $200 and get my Armorers Toolkit ordered and the $175 for sights and other parts before a three-time-use 15%-off coupon expires.
Wings/Sails: Trying to carve WGF-9 and SGN-3 up into $100 purchase blocks for acquisition to stay just above free-shipping threshold. Assembling data to try to figure out how to salvage the two British three-decker sculpts, and group and prioritize remaining sculpts needed to complete the Order of Battle for Trafalgar.
@Dave: If the minions start causing problems with the elves, I know a contractor who'd be happy to help straighten 'em out... Junior needs some help learning to be an Apex Predator for himself, rather than conning Mom into helping the toothy little guy steal my dinner. (Some "dad" I am... )
Run for your life - there are stupid people everywhere!
THERE's a nightmare... Richthofen meets Patton, two peas in a pod.
Would be funny to see a Grudge Match between MvR and Fat Bastard though... full of personal challenges like "I'll face you over X... IF you can stuff yourself back into a cockpit." Don't see the Baron exactly being welcomed on Airstrip One, though... so he'd probably have to go join George Kenney under MacArthur on the opposite side of the world.
Hmmm...
Wings of Glory Air Race candidates!

Patton and Richthofen working together might be a problem, as I don't recall MvR being much into tactical-air. Same applies to him being with Kenney's merry madmen. In fact, given the ape-squish insanity of most US airpower, MvR would probably be tearing what little hair he had out watching his "high-altitude escort" pilots coming home with empty ammo bins and tree branches on their pitot tubes....
These two didn't come through.
I really hate that cat! Crazy times trying to thin my hard drive on my phone, deletes the photos on Photobucket! Sorry about that!
I found a new micro rc self build kit company and my first order just arrived. I went for Stark's D.VII. Looks nicely printed and cut. I'm sure this will take up some bench space over the next few months. The guts from a Ł50 champ should work a treat.

If this goes well I'll try a brisfit next.

Those microaces kits are sure beautiful!
Looks like a hugely busy month all around.
And I thought I was busy with a couple of Nieuport 11
I'm taking my family to visit the reproduction Star Trek sets in Ticonderoga. While I have enough of the nicer phasers to outfit a landing party, I'm concerned that velcro failure might lead to dropped and broken phasers. So, I decided to get some of the lighter, cheaper Rubie's phasers and paint them in a scheme little more screen accurate.
The starting point.
With primer.
This is going to be an early first season black phaser with white handle.
The rest. Not sure what color schemes I'm going with on these, but I know Son#1 wants a bronze handled phaser, so that would be two shades of gray, a darker gray on the P1, and a lighter on the P2.

You could play a game on a sheet of 8.5" x 11" paper.
So how many books are in your personal library?
Or he could play a game which isn't "the Allies do nothing but straights and Immelmanns all day".... >;)
Hand full o' Hurries! Repaints, pours, Shapeways oh my!
Another dozen for the RAF project. And now for the L-4 report! Couldn't resist a pair of "Rosie the Rocketer"s
My first invasion stripes paint job . . .
Rocket tubes under each wing . . . would not want to be flying it when they were fired!
Navy hack . . .
Navy and Marine friends . . .
Fun little diversion indeed. They are actually Super Cubs at 1/220 scale from a model rail road fan on Shapeways, just an 1/8" shy of scale wingspan of a Piper L-4 . . . rats! Forgot the props, imagine them all with spinning prop disks, too much a hassle to redo the pics!
Coming up - Albatros D.V 2059/17

Here's the similar 2023/17
Re 1177/17
"The camouflage is apparent through the red paint. The upper wing was painted, left to right, mauve to 4.5 ribs from the aileron dark green and mauve from the third rib from the aileron along the trailing edge. (The slope was to the left about two rib spaces from the trailing edge.) The lower wings were dark green. The red covered the crosses, but the crosses and the borders show through the semi-transparent red paint. The tailplane L. to R. was mauve | dark green | mauve. The green sloped inward slightly at the leading edge on both sides."
Re 2059/17
I decided to use the 1177/17 translucent red wing covering on my interpretation of 2059/17, in accordance with a number of profiles. I retained the (repainted?) Better defined black cross with white outline of 2059/17.
Pix to follow.
Also: The cowlings are wrong for the WW2 Cub -- the cylinders projected out: http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/data...66_France_.jpg . But besides that nitpick, nice work.
No mistake on the cowls, I knew the Super Cubs were fully cowled engines, I did not want to try to cut them back given the delicate nature of the plastic, I lost the wheels several times and the wing struts kept coming loose - very nasty stuff. You will also note the rough texture where the Shapeways polishing team could not reach, making them look rough as cobs. So I just painted the engine cylinder heads and exhausts in place and left the cowls alone. Good eye. They will never get played so they are just there for effect and fun. I also hate the zero dihedral and droopy wing look . . . but the rockets are cool!
I should have taken a photo of it before the red overspray. It was originally in cammo, the lilac and green quite aesthetically pleasing.
But in order to get an authentic effect, that was just the base colour. You can still see it at certain light angles, though from most it appears to be just different shades of red. The fuselage with a warm yellow base is much brighter.
I wasn't implying that was your doing -- tho' knowing you, there's probably a Plot to get "proper" noses onto those.... :)
As to seeing them on the playing field: I'm not sure how best to simulate the problems fighters had engaging "ultra-slow" units like the Grasshoppers or the Storch; but I can see a game where one has to keep the spotter alive as long as possible, in support of an attack (or defense!).
I was cleaning out one of the barns today and re-discovered one of my other passions. One of my old Road Racing cars. She has not seen the track since 2004. Pretty sad. But since she will be worked on for the next couple of days I thought I'd add her to my "workbench". The snow will be falling soon and I will have ample time to work on the hobby gaming stuff. I am savoring the last bits of good weather while I can.
