Thread: Strutter Comic query?

    Question Strutter Comic query?

    G'day All!
Having just "snagged" myself a model of the Strutter Comic model from Keith & read the two special rule cards included I wondered if the Pilot would have been able to reload those Lewis Guns.

Enquiries over on the Aerodrome Historical Forum revealed that the Camel Comic was fitted with Foster Mounts so the Pilots could reload but no one has responded re the Strutters.

Anyone here got any info of suggestions?

Seems we have been here before, Foster mounts and "Strange mounts" were developed in the field, try a search, someone had some cool pics and history, but my meds fail me at the moment . . .

Check this modeling post: Modeling Madness - Roden 1/48 1 1/2 Strutter Comic Night Fighter

The mount shown there, and on the Ares miniature would lead me to believe that changing mags wouldn't be impossible.

This photograph shows that it is possible to reach the guns by standing up in the cockpit.

And that looks like the very aircraft Ares modelled.

I have a quest maybe someone can answer.

I looked but haven't found any info. yet.

Did they make a single seat 1 1/2 strut with the single gun firing through the prop?

Yes Mike- it was the first British aircraft to enter service with a synchronised machine gun and there was a single seat bomber version.

    OK

I bought 2 of the comics and took the twin guns off cut them in half, trimmed and painted it. Then I placed in the spot where the single gun would be firing through the prop.

Good idea! A single gun bomber escorted by a couple of ordinary 1 1/2 strutters ....hmmm!

I thought it was an easy change.

The single seat has a better climb/alt. numbers than the 2 seater. Might make a good escort in itself for battles before the Sopwith Pup came out.

The single seat Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter was built by omitting the observers cockpit. The saving in weight meant that more fuel and bombs could be carried. The single- seater was the bomber version. It could carry four 65lb bombs internally compared with four 25lb bombs underwing on the two-seater. Converting the comic version to a single-seater is not strictly historically accurate because the pilot's seat is too far back but I suppose it beats waiting ten or more years for Ares to reprint the models including an authentic bomber version.
Here are some pictures of the bomber version.

Thanks for that, a little filler and a craft knife might work on such a conversion?

Just a little touch up where you remove the guns.

The cockpit farther back then it should be, but it works for me.
