    Default Armouries 12th November 2016

    I am including a copy of the letter sent out ref this event (Somme Battle postponed from July).

    I am happy to take the lead with this but I need to know the following before responding:

    1. Who can attend.
    2.
    Size of playing area:
    a. 6x4.
    b. 8x6.
    c 12x4.

    3. What aircraft, mats etc you can provide.

    The game will incorporate aircraft used during the Battle of the Somme with similar missions.

    Neil

    Dear All,

    As you are all aware following an email from Kirsty, I am now leading on the Wargaming events here at the museum.

    I can confirm that the WWI war gaming event will be taking place here in the Royal Armouries Newsroom on Saturday 12 November, 11am until 4pm.

    Please could all groups who would like to take part in this event let me know the answers to the following questions no later than 30 September?

    ˇ Will volunteers be ambassadors as in previous events?
    ˇ Details of what games you will be bringing;
    ˇ A short blurb and image of your game and topic;
    ˇ Number of trestle tables required (6ft x 4ft) for your game;

    As mentioned by Kirsty, we are reviewing how we deal with expenses and public liability insurance so I will come back to you about this.

    I look forward to hearing from you.
    Kind Regards,

    Gail

    It's a week after Crisis in Antwerp, so I think I would have used up my 'good boy' vouchers by then.

    I am afraid I will be unable to make that date Neil as it is also the date of our Regimental dinner.

    Hi Neil

    I'd love to be able to do this one (never been to the Armouries!) but can't say for certain just yet.

    It's a stretch for my fuel tanks, but I'll try to sort something.

    Ok. I'll start working on a list of aircraft for this game. But essentially pre-start of Somme, June, to end around November with aircraft replacements to show progression of newer types as and when they became available.

    I would also like to try for Squadron orbats if possible as part way through the Jasta were formed.

    if we are not busy that day - will have to check diary - will see if I can get over for this just to meet up and introduce myself - being a complete rookie might be best if I just observe otherwise the best that could happen is a)- very authentic and only last a matter of minutes as the more experienced treat me as cannon fodder or b) more problematic and just slow the game down due to not being terribly familiar with the game play /rules. Slightly out of my usual comfort zone - last time I was at the armories was demonstrating use of mastiff dogs in war whilst dressed in silly clothes.

    Another heads up on day. We each have to be an ambassador for the event for 30 minutes. Not heavy or difficult. Much what we do at shows anyway. I'll explain more on the day. So don't worry.

    Could all who have UK WING polo shirts please wear them. Ta.

    so I take it - no mention of the large quantities of aviation fuel being stored near the ventilation system to provide the authentic smell to the game area then ...

    Don't forget the high degree of danger from plastic flames Neil. As I will not be there to attract them, they will be randomly distributed about the venue.

    Don't forget the risk to the kiddies that are a little heavy handed with your planes . It's a wonder they haven't asked for you all to be CRB checked as well. But I'm assuming the ambassadors get to hand out Ferrero Rocher?

    Steve you want to see the list of do's and donts where children are concerned, even down to no fixing broken models in situ. Any sharp bits need to be smoothed off etc, now must make note to tell all attending with planes to remove propellers!

    Well that was fun... we had a good turn out at the Armories today, solid showing from the Yorkshire Squadron with Myself, Reg and Doug, we were also able to welcome Dave from Blackpool on his first Aerodrome event, which was nice (I am sure he will tell you all about the two kills he achieved in the morning) but biggest call out has to be to a couple of our show stalwarts who seem to always have the drop tanks equipped - so massive thanks to Neil for coming South from Northumberland to Leeds and to Tim for enduring the return trip from London for the day. Bloody well done chaps.

    A couple of great games were had - I got to spend the day flying one of the new Sopwith Strutters, which proved to be very effective - in the morning it was DH2s vs. Eindeckers (including Tim' A firing E.IVs - and he dares to talk to me about up-gunning !!!!!!!!!) whilst the Strutter took a leisurely flight to successfully photograph the enemy airfield, then in the afternoon it was a bunch of mostly FEs balloon busting against the new Albatrosses. Fair to say mixed results for the pilots - great fun for the players. I am sure there will be lots of nice photos from the chaps once they have recovered.

    Finally big thanks to Simon (Strangely Brown) for the loan of his splendid western front mat (Which by the way I have at the moment Simon)

    Hedeby's comments above seconded but what he failed to mention is that we lost five (of six) DH 2's escorting his Strutter to the target and back. They also serve who who get shot down a lot! Great day despite that.
    Yes, you've guessed it. I was flying two of the escort who both crash landed for lack of fuel.
