28 Squadron RFC/RAF Markings

I was trawling through some ancient Military Modelling magazines from 1971 (which is what we did before t'internet) when I'm came across articles on RFC squadron markings, one of which dealt with 28 Sqn RFC/RAF.

It says they went to France 8th Oct 1917 equipped with Camels and were in action 2 days later bombing and strafing Rumbeke aerodrome.
Due to the poor situation in Italy after the battle of Caporetto it was decided to send some sqns to assist and on 12th Nov 1917 28 Sqn arrived in Milan and ready for action two days later.
After the end of the First World War it had claimed 136 victories.

Squadron marking: A white square painted on the fuselage sides behind the cockade, about 12" square.

Individual markings: Large 'styalised' white letters in front of the fuselage cockade.
'A' flight used A,B,C,D,E,F
'B' flight used G,H,J,K,L,M
'C' flight used N,O,P,Q,R,S
Flight cmdrs used 'A' 'G' 'N' with streamers on both rear interplane struts; deputy leader carried a streamer on the rudder.


'B' Flt Cmdr Captain James H. Mitchells Camel of No. 28 Squadron - he scored six of his 11 victories flying Camel B6344, including an AEG shared with two Italian pilots on December 26, 1917.

Of course Captain William G. Barker V.C. was also part of this squadron and this could be another quick re-marking project to get some RFC Camels in action over Italy.

28 Sqn also flew in WW2 in India/Burma theatres.
