Thread: Updated images for Taffy 2 (Escort Carrier, Butler Destroyer, and Fletcher Destroyer)

  1. #1

Default Updated images for Taffy 2 (Escort Carrier, Butler Destroyer, and Fletcher Destroyer)

After completing the Top Down 1/200 Ryujo image, I had to update the 3 prior images (They lacked Pop)

I think after you see the comparison, you may agree.

I just uploaded the 3 files to the World War II moderator queue and will provide the links when they become available.

I am the most excited about the Escort Carrier, I found some images online to better explain the ships layout so I was able to correct the lack of detail on the first image produced.

    Great job, Chris.

The destroyers especially now have the "pop" you were looking for.

Thank you for noticing the Pop Pete...

I hope to get back to the IJN ships now... The US Taffy 3 ships were paining me because they lacked POP!!! LOL...

    Have a great evening Pete...

    Wow, that was fast...

All the ships have been uploaded and are available at: http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/dow...hp?do=cat&id=7

And it should have been Taffy 3 not Taffy 2 on the thread header (it was a late night when I posted it )

    Chris,
If you take a look at any of my draft cards I post, especially when I am creating a custom plane on a thread, the difference shading and highlighting makes to an image is astounding. A very flat two dimensional image suddenly develops realism and life. Nice work on the ships, and probably more pain than doing individual ribs on a wing.

Same drawings, exactly the same colors. The only difference is shading (translucent fuzzy black) and highlighting (translucent fuzzy white) on the first one.

    And thank you good sir...
I hope to get started on the IJN Kagaro Class Destroyer in the next 2 weeks with a targeted 4 week production time.
I have the image I scaled and ready to be overdrawn at:

Very good work again Chris! I undertstand these are only static objects to be place on the field of battle right? Or are there any movement rules for them? Or for the guns?
    Thanks

Sorry about the slow response Nick,

I just got back from vacation and had been away from my computer.

Thank you for voicing interest in the images.

Ultimately I hope to put together a Mod to cover the use of these ships completely; but for the time being, I have been using the rules in the back of the manual below (It also covers take off and landings):

    http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/dow...o=file&id=2041

    Carrier/Ship Movement:
Aircraft carriers and other ships may move every 3rd maneuver card played.

In this mod, ships turn by rotating on their center point up to 1 inch to the left or right as measured from the center of the bow of the ship. Note that shorter ships will be able to turn tighter than longer ships.

Ships may move forward up to 2 inches, and backwards up to 1 inch. To move backwards, a ship must have been at a stop on its previous move.

    Additionally,

The armament on each ship would be used as follows:

20mm AA = standard machine gun emplacement rules from the WOG rulebook using C damage chips at 2 ruler distance for each barrel (instead of A chip).
40mm AA = standard machine gun emplacement rules from the WOG rulebook using D damage chips at 2 ruler distance for each barrel (instead of A chip).
or Standard AA canon rules (you would want to commit to one use or the other [machine gun vs. Flack] to simulate having a certain round type loaded at the time of the attack).

I.e. Close in attacks would warrant the use of 40mm as machine guns and higher altitude dive bombing type attack would be loaded with Flack/anti aircraft cannon rounds).

My brother Joe came up with the following regarding 1/200 ship damage:

Take the bomb weight and remove a zero... I.e. 500 LB bomb would cause 50 points of damage.
It takes 200 points to destroy an 11 inch (single page) section of any ship.
It takes greater than half of the 11inch sections to sink a ship. I.e. a Fletcher class would go down if hit by 200 points because it only has one 11 inch section but an Escort carrier would require 2 sections to be hit (200 points or more) to sink.

It the aircraft dropped ordnance were to strike any of the destroyer torpedo banks, you would count/include the damage resulting from each torpedo stored within the bank (this would be bad for that ship).

If any one else has any ideas, please share...

    Chris,
You should check out Neil's [Skafloc] Air-Ship rules. He has been developing a bunch of techniques and rules for bombs and torpedoes.

    Thank you Mike,

I have to agree with you, I have admired Neil's work for some time. I had read through his rules and was extremely impressed.

So much so that I came up with some aircraft torpedo graphics just so I may use them with his rules.

But you are right, I really don't have anything official that I use for these ships yet, so I will start with Neil's work and give consideration to the 1/200, 1/400, 1/800, 1/1600 scales these ships are printable at.

Thanks for the reminder regarding Neil's work Mike (nice catch sir).
