    Default Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome Pics

August 19-21 the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome is having a special WWI event, a Military Mobilization! Besides the usual wonderful airplanes there will be reenactors camping out. Weather permitting my wife and I will be taking the 4 hour drive Saturday morning hoping to get there before noon. Air shows start ~2. Hope to see some of our Aerodrome members there!

Had great weather for the visit to the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome. A bit breezy when the air show started so a few planes didn't fly more than 10 feet off the runway.
Here are some of the pics of Caudron G.3, Sopwith Pup, Sopwith Camel, Morane Saulnier N, Nieuport 10 and a Seimens Schuckert DIII. The Pup didn't fly as it was just finished with refurb work and didn't have the paperwork done.
    More tomorrow...

Ok gents, today we have a 1911 Bleriot 11. They claim it is the 2nd oldest original plane still flying. The older one is another Bleriot that is 1 month older.
Albatros DVa, Fokker E5, Fokker DVII and some shots from the flight we took.

It was a little too breezy for the Bleriot to go for any altitude but it made a low fly by along the runway.

We took the flight in a New Standard D-25. Fantastic flight with great views of the Hudson Valley and the Catskills in the distance. Had never been in an open top before, exhilarating to say the least!

Very nice work on the close-ups. IDK if they're using restored or replica, but either way, you have to respect the amount of work they put in.

If you go to their website (see post #1) they list their collection. You can see what is original and what is replica. As you say, a great effort to have what they have.

I used to volunteer there when I lived in the Hudson Valley. It was and still is a wonderful place for antique aviation enthusiasts. Visits there as a youngster instilled my interest in WW1 aviation. Really miss the place. Great pics! Thanks for posting.

    Very nice, thanks!

What struck me was what a mess the rotary engines make (especially the Caudron). It may change the way I paint airplanes with rotaries... most of the color paintings and diagrams tend to show planes in factory-fresh condition.

My thought exactly when I first saw the Caudron! They had a devil of a time starting it up. It took a second man to spin the prop as the first guy wore himself out trying. The Nieuport 10 in the museum hangar has a drip pan under it's rotary. It didn't look too messy but I didn't think to look underneath beyond the engine.

Thanks David. Finally! When I went to the first Doncaster in Sept. '14 I went to Hendon after to see the WWI display. To my horror it wasn't open! The rest was wonderful but I was crushed not to be able to see the WWI collection. Just have to get back before the exhibit closes in 2020.

At the start of the season they would fly trials to make sure everything was up to snuff. My nephew and I had a great flight in the New Standard D-25. Ken Cassens, ORA's pilot and head of restorations really put it through it's paces (including a diving corkscrew around a red tailed hawk!). We even got jumped by the Spad VII which was very cool to see mid-flight. Got to be a wing runner when the Fokker Dr.l would land (it's propensity for ground looping always made that duty a little nerve wracking!). Of course the biggest perk was being able to work closely with those wonderful old birds. Quite a unique place. I plan on making a trip up in early October before the show season ends.

When I look at the list of what is in their collection of WWI planes, quite a few were not there. I didn't see the Avro 504K, Fokker EIII, Morane-Saulnier A1, Nieuport 11, Sopwith Dolphin, SPAD VII or RAF FE8. Are they being worked on off site? At other venues/museums? I really wanted to see the Sopwith Dolphin and SPAD VII. Maybe next time.
