Thread: IJN Kagero Class Destroyer Ship Yard

  1. #1

Default IJN Kagero Class Destroyer Ship Yard

    Here we go...!!!

I'm really excited about this one because Ryujo looks lonely sailing by herself, and needs AA support from a multi destroyer escort such as the IJN Kagero class destroyer.
Although the source data pictured below is for a 1941 deck plan, I hope to update the final image to 1944 to 1945 specs.

Before I get started, I want to give credit to Dr. Dan Saranga for the use of his source work originally retrieved from: https://www.the-blueprints.com/bluep...royer)_(1941)/

Also, If interested, these are the ships, from the upload section, completed previously:

1/200 scale 2D Top Down Ryujo:

    1/200 Fletcher Class Destroyer:

If you want to get an idea of what she looks like in 3D, check out Skafloc's post under: http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/sho...-master-part-2

I had been stalled on this one because I was diverting attention to the load plan definitions for the 4 new aircraft released as part of series 6.

Fantastic Chris. This will be a great addition to the Japanese fleet.

Unfortunately Chris I based mine on a Fubuki class and the keel was laid before you started this project. Wished I'd waited though. Looks real nice.

I haven't forgotten her, she is next...

    It has begun...

It doesn't look like much, but the first step is to starkly define the hull so that both port and starboard are perfectly symmetrical with a red line running through her center:

With the symmetry in place and the center established, the many objects on her deck can be scaled, centered, and shaded.

Please, any input regarding her is super welcome. I have been collecting images of her from the web, and had to tackle the anchor rigging before starting... Have you seen the anchor webbing on this one..? Screwy (but effective I'm sure).

    Diamondback,
I never thanked you for the idea of making different destroyer class variations like that.
Ultimately I want to get to that option and am hoping to knock out a Japanese cargo ship after the Kagero class.

Thank you again for the information sir,

Although I have my theories, I haven't been able to get a solid idea of what that structure accompanying the forward Stack is.

I have deliberately excluded it until I get an understanding of what it is (I will included it, I just want to understand it first).

The mystery structure (to me at least) is, In the image above, the small black rectangle area above the black of the oval forward stack area.

I have seen it in all images of this destroyer class and that it extends from just below the base of the bridge's superstructure.

If any one knows, please let me know

It is a battle trying to make small scale pixel-ation look right.

I just finished the crates this weekend, as well as my guess regarding the circled (see below) structure ascending to the port side of the main stack.

I wish I could see how those crates worked, I think they could load / unload torpedoes from the top of an open crate but also pull them directly into the launcher from an opening aft of each crate.

It makes me wonder where these model makers (i.e. Revel, Linberg) get their data for production plastic models.

I'm happy to plagiarize from their completed model images but admittedly would have trouble if not for them.

Please let me know if you see anything that may be changed sir.

    Thank you David,
    Chris

Is there a reason you have not been using the Kagero 3D book on the Kagero by Waldemar Goralski? This is a must for a project like yours, I found it on Amazon for $20 a few years ago, it is an outstanding reference and all done on a digital model. The book comes with drawings and some amazing computer graphics . . . should be right up your alley, or dock . . . here are a few teasers: 1/200" scale six pack

Here's the area in question looking aft: (Sorry about the rotation . . . )

    Looking forward:

I was able to capture some of those pictures online, but not those 2 (one with open torpedo pen door)...
    And nice 1/200 six pack...

I was wondering where those images came from...

    Nice reference David...

After the Kagero it will be onto the Kashino cargo ship. Due you have any references on that one, and like Neil, I would be interested in any other recommendations you have sir.

    Pete,

I have to tell you, those pictures from your book and learning how that track system works/how it was used has really helped with the project.
Based on you pictures, I'm guessing the torpedoes were loaded onto the fantail of the ship in port, and then (utilizing the track system) distributed to the storage boxes and launchers.
That really makes the Kagero destroyer an impressive class.

I'm thinking about reviewing Skafloc's ship rules, the Sails of Glory rules, and then try to come up with a mod for dynamic action regarding ship images (1/200 through 1/1600).
Unless someone wants to beat me to it... Ares..? Anyone..?

Thank you again Pete for your help with those images sir,
    Chris

Chris, if you think that's impressive you should check out Shimakaze--a one-off superdestroyer that could theoretically sink an entire squadron of opposing tin-cans in one torpedo salvo.

Shimakaze packed quintuple mounts too (15 in an all-out volley). Truly a "BRING ME MY BROWN TROUSERS!" moment... unless you hit her with battleship or cruiser fire, or airpower, before she could start the run.

No worries! : ) The computer graphics reminded me of MYST but a little creepy for some reason. The track idea is very cool, but I cannot imagine it would be good on a rolling deck in some rough weather . . . but who moves torpedoes in those conditions : )
