Thread: Otto Bernert's last stand

  1. #1

    Default Otto Bernert's last stand

Surfing through Aerodrome site (Aces) I realised that one of Jasta 2 members, Oberleutnant Otto Bernert was born, lived and died very young in Racibórz, a town some 80 km south of my place.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fritz_Otto_Bernert

They even published a photo of his grave in Jerusalem, a very old cemetary in Racibórz.
Some weeks ago I decided to visit the cemetery, find the grave and check if there is any need for care of the place.
The cemetery employees were very helpful and competent. They look up in a register and showed the way.
I bought a small lamp we often use to light and commemorate the dead and found the grave with ease.

The grave is still there, someone takes care of it. The black table with name and "Pour le Merite" info is present.
Besides him, probably his mother is burried there as well.
I spent some time in silence. Below you have some pictures I took in the place.

I asked (on behalf of our community) the cemetary staff if I might fund a better information table on the pilot and fix it there and it was quite welcome by the lady-director. I think it is a project I shall proceed in the near future.

A very brave young man taken, as millions were, by the 'Spanish flu'.

What a wonderful discovery, Andy - nice to see that it is as well taken care of as it is. He was one of the crop of 'early' PLM recipients. I'm glad you were able to pay your respects...

    All the best,
    Matt

    Thumbs up

    Great idea Andy!

I was impressed by the Cemetery as it is very nicely kept & has beautiful foliage.

It is indeed. Looks like a park. Lots of XIX century old graves and interesting monuments there and the staff seems to be well organized and competent. The graves are catalogued and easy to find. I was truly impressed.

I strongly support your idea about information desk!
May be it is not necessary to have it right near the grave, but a desk near entrance to the cemetery with simple map (where the grave is), photo of Oberleutnant, picture of Blue Max and one or two paragraphs (Polish + English) about his life would be superb

I like your idea, Daniel. A multilingual info desk with a photo by the entrance is the thing.

The (not even just) English text on board designed by Canadian (Mike, yeah!) about German ace in Poland - that sounds exactly like the Aerodrome project!

Hey Andrzej, you dicovered the grave of a WW I fighter ace.

    Nice thread.

Remind me on our secret mission to Świdnica.

I wish I could do more to preserve memory of the brave young pilots of the past. They deserve it. Be sure I will take care of this particular grave.
    That is my duty.

Like Peter says, Andy, keep us in the loop - if there's anything you find you need, either $$$-wise or otherwise, let us know.

Thanks for 'flying the flag' for the Forum!

    All the best,

My friend Rob was in Europe last month an took his WGF MvR to the site where he was shot down, and took a picture of it there.
Apparently he had quite the argument with the tour guide about where it was ...
