While at the RAF Museum I saw that many of the exhibits in the Battle of Britain Hall were being dismantled. Signs said this was for in-depth examination for restoration purposes. However, I struck up a conversation with one of the staff who told a more worrying picture. It appears the BoB Museum will be no more and the aircraft therein will be dispersed, either to areas within the Hendon site, RAF Cosford or put in storage. Given the available space at Hendon and Cosford I would guess most will be put in store, particularly the German/Italian aircraft.
The BoB building itself will apparently become a visitors centre, including a children's play area with a token number of planes on display.
Given that the BoB exhibition was a unique memorial to the men of all nationalities who fought in the Battle of Britain, I find it appalling that the Museum would even think of dispersing such a valuable collection. My 'source' suggested that the person responsible for this act of cultural vandalism is someone who has no background in military history and who's only experience in aviation is taking Eastjet to her holiday destination.
The WW1 in the Sky exhibition in the Graeme White hangar is due to end in 2020, so who knows what they intend to do with the aircraft there once that closes.
