Tuesday night Recon Battles

German High Command (aka Windy Jack) is convinced the enemy are up to something and demand that a recon mission be performed over the railyards just behind the lines. The only planes available are two Fokker E.III's and a Gotha G.I Floatplane. Protests are made but the order has been given. The target is putting up heavy flak and they want to know why. The Flak starts up once the GE planes cross the lines. The 2 fighters close on the Gotha to offer support. Two French Moraines close on the formation and a British DH2 comes in to offer support. The first blood is scored by the Gotha who repeatedly hits the black nosed Moraine as he overshoots the bomber. He takes two special damage cards and the dreaded explosion card. One down, two to go.


The valiant Goth presses on but the enemy attack has thrown off his aim and he only secures a partical set of photos of the railyards. He starts to take heavy damage from the continuous flak barrage that is handing out B cards, one for one ruler length and two for half ruler length. The damage becomes too much and the Gotha crashes to the ground. Cold comfort is achieved by the Grey Escort E.III killing the remaining Moraine shortyly afterwards. Now to get home.

In an epic struggle the DH2 overhauls the fleeing Fokkers and guns them both down but not before suffering fire damage and hits from his last victim in a head on encounter. The butchers bill for the day - 5 planes downed, 3 German and 2 French. There was nothing of interest at the Railway yards, just a Flak trap that caused almost as much damage to the Defending planes as it did the Germans. Flak does not discrimate. A hollow victory for the allies.

The pilot of the cream Fokker E.III thought he was home free because he was so much closer to home than the DH2. However he seriously underestimated the speed of the DH2 which, as Baxter reported, caught him and brought him down. After that the other Fokker was in trouble because the DH2 was between it and home, and could outrun the Fokker if it tried any tactics to get around the DH2.

The moral is: learn the capabilities of your opponent!

That was certainly a bruising encounter for both sides; sticks, canvas and splinters scattered all over the place.
Not sure how a DH2 overhauls an E.III as the P & T decks are both in the same speed band but he certainly caught them !

So jealous to see those new maps in use downunder, but thanks for posting. Looks like quite the battle.


You have also reminded me that i do need to get the P & T decks added to my Excel solo movement file.

P.S. This weekend I might actually dig out some of the WGS aircraft I bought from you last year
