It makes sense when you know that Turkish Armed Forces are guardkeepers of Mustafa Ataturk's legacy. Its role is not only defend Turkey from enemies outside, but even inside. And I can imagine easily, that some officers had a feeling that it is necessary to act and protect secular state organization. If they were right or not I do not know and really do not want to guess.
