15 Apr 1916 renamed formerly the 1st Squadriglia Caccia equipped with 8 Ni 10’s. Based at S.Caterina, Udine and its CO was cap. Guido Tacchini. Pilots were ten. Francesco Baracca, serg. Giulio Poli, caporali Anselmo Caselli and Antonio Pagliari and sold. Luigi Olivari.
Aug 1916 equipped with 8 N11s, 4 N10s and 1 captured Brandenburg C.I and received ten. Fulco Ruffo di Calabria.
Oct 1916 was equipped with Le Prieur rockets for balloon busting.
21 Oct 1916 received its first 110 hp N17 2614 Baracca got it.
11 Nov 1916 serg. Renato Ghizzoni flying a N11 crashed when taking off and was killed.
End of 1916: flew 600 missions and engaged in 52 air combats with 7 confirmed victories.
01 Jan 1917 was equipped with 9 N11s, 2 N17s and an unknown Nieuport with 11 pilots, cap. Guido Tacchini cap. Francesco Baracca, cap Bosio, ten. Ruffo, s.ten. Giuseppe Gentili, serg. Giulio Poli, Anselmo Caselli, Gorini, Antonio Pagliari, Luigi Olivari and Ferruccio Guicciardi.
17 Jan 1917 s.ten. Gentili flying a N11 spun and crashed to his death.
15 Mar 1917 received 2 Spad 7s 4688 and 4689 Olivari and Ruffoe were assigned to fly them.
10 Apr 1917 assigned to the X Gruppo and commanded by Mag. Piccio. It was grouped together with 78a and 79a.
End of Apr 1917: Pilots started to fly the Spad VII on strategic recon missions. Got new pilots serg. Guido Nardini, ten. Bortolo Costantini and Vittorio Melloni. The CO cap. Tacchini was replaced by cap. Buzzi Gradenigo
01 May 1917: the 91st was formed from 70a and received all the Spads but 1 and all the best pilots. That left the 70a N11s and N17s and a single Spad of Group Commander Piccio.
Aug 1917 pilots were cap. Buzzi Gradenigo the CO, Caselli, Guicciardi, Pagliari, ten. Felice De Gasperi, ten. Enrico Ferreri, s.ten. Aldo Bognetti, asp. Gioacchino Sartor, serg. Fernando Nelli and Angelo Pini.
24 Aug 1917 unit moved to La Comina.
09 Nov 1917 unit moved to Istrana and equipped with seven N17s.
