    Default Unboxing WGS203A

    Douglas SBD-5 Dauntless (Lee)

First of all Great bird, Love the model. I will be pimping it up a little.
Now my only complaint is the specialty card.
Fire Expert; When receiving smoke or fire damage, this airplane takes two tokens instead of three.
The rule book states when you get smoke or fire you take six tokens and not three.

This is not WWI. These cards will help to teach the new players the game. I hope you fix this to strengthen the game.

I tried but I have too many photos it said. I guess I have to drop some.

Here are a few photos of the new Dauntless. They look great but... the position of the bomb is too close to the peg. Two of my three
I can't get the plane on the flight peg. I'm sure it won't take much to either file the bomg or a peg but this should not have happened.

I was interested in Peter's note and I tried it immediately. My SBD fits perfectly.

The Dauntless uses the I maneuver deck.

The ace skill cards are for the French plane, Perfect Control, this skill requires the use of 'Fly by Instinct' rule. A pilot with this skill may ignore the Fly by instinct rule.

The USMC plane has, Fire Expert. When receiving smoke or fire damage this airplane takes two tokens instead of three. Oops, in WGS you take 6 tokens. This looks like a WGF skill. Maybe take 4 instead of 6?

The Pacific Dauntless, BS VB-16 has Precision Dive Bombing. When dive bombing is declared, before showing planned maneuvers, the player may announce 'long' or say nothing. If he says 'long', place a stall maneuver card in front of the bomber and then place the bomb card, so it's arrow matches the arrow of the stall maneuver card. If teh player says nothing, execute the dive bombing normally.

    Sadly Andy I must agree!
The colour schemes look too "busy" for me although I do like the Dive Brake details.

I much prefer the simpler earlier War colour schemes.

Ares seems to prefer the eye-catching schemes for their product to attract new customers. Like your SBDs I prefer my plain old A-24s.

I do like the Pacific version and it will look much better when the edged are painted. Their decals never seem to get the edges on any of their planes.

That is excellent detail on your model, Peter. May I ask how you achieve such fine lines, please?

Well I opened one of each variant of the whole of series (109K/P47/Dauntless and Judy) and can say they look fine as gaming pieces.
That's what I bought them for.

Had to go out and buy more storage today ....

Thanks David. I prime black, then leave the fine lines between the panels. It takes a bit of time trying to not paint those fine lines! It is helpful that the AIM models have the detail to follow. Without the detail it is much more difficult.
I shaves a toothpick to a point to dot the air brakes.

Have you tried a thin black wash? That's what I assumed you had done.

I don't try to do any detail work with washes as I haven't gotten consistant predictable results. Washes I find are great for overall effect, especially weathering. I have a black ink I want to try for a wash but will have to experiment a bit with it before I use it.
