This is a solo game based on Carl's WF PF01 - Fighting Jasta 'Felmy'... I flew the Bristol, the Hun's are AI controlled.
Palestine, 5 March 1918: About 1000hrs a Bristol F.2Bs of No.1 Squadron Australian Flying Corps (AFC) conducting a reconnaissance over the village of Jaljulia near the Mediterranean coast Piloted by Lt. Eustace Headlam with observer Lt. Edward Beaton when it's attacked by two Albatros D.IIIs of German unit Jasta ‘Felmy’ piloted in this game by Ltn Kurt Kohlbach (Voss) & Fwbl Martin Zander
Headlam decides to go for the lead aircraft (randomly decided), moves to the left in a climbing turn to expose his rear gun, sideslips away but the Albatros lead matches the climb and bores straight in. The first exchange is inconclusive...
As Headlam cuts back to the right Beaton unleashes a long and accurate burst into Kohlbach's Albatros
All machines manoeuvre for position, Headlam Immels...
Headlam goes head to head with the number two Albatros - his gun jams but his luck holds as so does Zander's
Beaton gets his guns back under control following the reversal and pops a few rounds into the lead Albatros as he looks for an opening
The leader sees his chance and takes it, rolling in and raking the Bristol at close range, his guns jam and he gets as good as he gives as Beaton responds in kind.
His rudder damaged, his aircraft mortally damaged, Kohlbach must escape. being a shade higher he's not in the blind spot but Beaton fails to capitalise as the Albatros slips away
The number two Albatros covers the lead as he retires from the field, Headlam gathers himself and sorts out a problem with his controls & Beaton reloads his twin Lewis guns before they both head back into the fight.
They are soon back in action and knocking lumps off each other - Headlam's controls are damaged again and the Bristol catches fire,
Enough going on to put Beaton off his stride as they separate ...
The Hun rushes back in, guns blazing...
He passes almost close enough to touch...And Beaton reaches out.. setting him ablaze
Tweaking his tail as he goes out of range
Both pilots nurse their sorely wounded and flaming aircraft - Headlam's is in a sorry state and he has to head for base
They trade shots again and Beaton's guns jam
This allows the Hun to close for the kill shot, Headlams machine staggers under the onslaught and rolls toward the ground.
Butcher's Tally:
Headlam & Beaton SD-FLM-ET / 0 kills
Ltn Kurt Kohlbach RTB / 0 Kills
Fwbl Martin Zander RTB / 1 Kill
Fun scenario to play, I thought Headlam might get the result but it goes to show you never can tell.
I used my D8 charts, alt rules and OTT rules in playing this.
