This is great info, Zoe! Am I correct in assuming that the information before the // indicates Turkish aircraft and that after the // indicates the German planes?

Since I only know a bare minimum about air combat and the involved forces in this theater of the war, can you recommend a resource or two which covers this area? Most books that I have cover it in only a cursory fashion.

    All the best,
    Matt

Great info Zoe. I second Matt's request if you have and info on books that cover the theater. Thanks again!

That's correct. As for books - nothing else I have compares to this one. It's as complete a single source as you can get, names, dates, personal accounts of individual actions.

So is it a book you get from him for your $25 or is it a CD (as appears in your parenthetical note)...?

I've run across basic info about German Jastas in the Middle East and Turkey, but no specifics. Does Nikolajsen supply specifics of flying units and so forth along with plane and pilot information? On the strength of your recommendation I am tempted to order it, but ideally I would prefer a hard copy...

    All the best,
    Matt

CD with pdfs of each chapter, including photos I've not seen anywhere else. There are specifics about units, strengths, individual pilots, individual engagements, maps, photos taken, bombing assessments... a hard copy would have to be in several volumes.

CHAPTER. 1 11-18 A NEW FORCE OF SIPAHI-THE START OF OTTOMAN ARMY AVIATION 1912
CHAPTER. 2 19-28 THREE WARS IN ONE YEAR THE BALKAN WARS OCT.1912 - SEP.1913
    CHAPTER. 3 29-40 EXPLORATION OF THE EMPIRE OCTOBER 1913 - AUGUST 1914
CHAPTER. 4 41-48 A TOTALLY INADEQUATE FORCE - THE FIRST MONTHS OF WAR FOR THE OTTOMAN FLYING UNITS 1914
CHAPTER. 5 49-56 THE REVIVAL OF THE OTTOMAN ARMY FLYING ORGANISATION 1915
    CHAPTER. 6 57-76 AIRWAR OVER GALLIPOLI 1915-1916
    CHAPTER. 7 77-100 A MULTIFRONT AIRWAR 1915-1918
CHAPTER. 8 101-124 PASA AND YILDIRIM - THE PALESTINE FRONT 1915-1918
CHAPTER. 9 125-156 THE BATTLES OF THE RIVERS - THE IRAQ FRONT 1915-1918
CHAPTER. 10 157-174 MOUNTAIN WARFARE (THE BATTLE FOR CAUCASUS)
CHAPTER. 11 THE AIR DEFENCE OF ISTANBUL 1917-1918
CHAPTER. 12 175-184 185-216 THE COASTGUARD OPERATIONS IN WEST ANATOLIA AND THE BLACK SEA 1916-1918
CHAPTER. 13 PEACE WITHOUT PEACE 1918
    CHAPTER. 14 AIRCRAFT DELIVERED 1912-1918
CHAPTER. 15 AIRCREW SERVING WITH THE OTTOMAN FORCES OR GERMAN FORCES IN THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE 1914-1918 SOURCES AND REFERENCES

Where it falls down is in the sketchiness of the descriptions of opposing forces. For those, you need to cross-reference war diaries of the Australian Flying Corps and RFC. But as regards the Turkish side, it's as complete as you could want, with the possible exception of omitting seriel numbers of aircraft.

A small selection from Chap 8
The units continued to receive new or repaired aircraft, but to no avail as FA301 alone lost an aircraft on the 3rd of August, one on the 16th and two on the 28th and 31st. FA304(b) lost one of its valuable Rumplers on the 1Oth of August.
When JASTA 1 started to get its new Pfalz D.III fighters only 4 experienced fighter pilots were alive. Shortly after, on the24th of August, when 2 Pfalz's were attacked by the omni-present Bristol Fighters, one was shot down in flames whereas Lt. Walter in the other was badly hit. He tried to escape with the help of his parachute, but it failed to open. (This is the first recorded use of a parachute in the Middle East). On the 1st of September a total force of 8 recce and 5 fighter aircraft were
available to the Pasa units, but only 4 sorties were flown up to the 15th of the month.

It's amazing how much data there is when one's files didn't get destroyed in the follow-up war.... :)
