    Default Tales of ORIGINS 2016;)

Let me bring back some funny moments and anegdotes of ORIGINS 2016.
Believe me, there were some I witnessed myself or heard about.
If any of the participants remember any other story - please share them with the community.

    #1. The Happy Jammer.
It was the first WGF scenario I played on Thursday. Being a member of American squad I was flying one of the beautiful Nieuport 28s against a German Jasta of D.VII. After one of the first passes I draw a jam card. OK, that happens - 3 maneuvers will pass quickly. However, I tried to stay on target anyway and was succesful. Then ! Another jam. Well... I did not give up, staying healthy, still enemies in my gun sight, hammering the gun, three turns. Now the third jam! Arghhh! Next three turns (9 total), slightly going mad, drawing some 0 or 1s, no problem. Now ! FOURTH JAM! Guys at the table started laughing 12 consecutive turns with jammed guns! Happy at last, always on tail of the enemy, and the enemy spirals down to earth. Ufff! At the end of the day I scored one kill and stayed alive not being shot down, surviving the onslaught.
The funniest thing was I was able to stay right behind one enemy or the other, hammering the guns to unjam them. Epic!

#2. Yeah, the game is damn historically accurate.
Cappy Tom was gamemastering a WGS scenario. One of the younger players was a complete newbie.
Tom was really helpful, announced we would help the newbies to deal with the damage counters they receive. So when this newbie got shot at with three B counters and draw them from the bag, Tom approached te newbie player and kindly asked to show him the three counters just drawn.
Tom is examining the damage counters one by one:
    - "This is the smoke. You trail the smoke."
    - "Yeah, the second one: this is the fire. Your plane is on fire now."
    - "And this one is explosion. You are exploding."

I almost LMHO when I heard the story.

WELL THATS ONE WAY; the raf is trying to intercept 2 zeppelin staakins on their way to london. they prove to be quite the beast absorbing lots punishment while shooting down snipes, se5a, and bristols left and right. the dallas se5 (sorry i dont recall the players name) strays a little to close to one mighty staaken and they collide. the staaken takes 10 points and goes down while the se5 takes minimal damage (2 or something) and keeps flying.

"do they clink when you walk........" this isnt a wings of glory story but i think youll find it entertaining none the less. i had a couple hours to kill before the last wgs scenario on sunday so i decided to partake of one of my other convention favorites the battletech grinder. battletech is another miniatures game based (loosely) on a japanese anime with large, piloted walking robot "battlemechs". the grinder is a pure combat scenario where you start out in a light mech (35 tons or less), and work your way up through ofther classes of mech (medium, 40-55 tons, heavy, 60-75, and assault 80-100) as you get killed and respawn.

since this is my 1st time in the grinder this convention i start in light mech, a 20 ton "stinger' with minimal shorter ranged weaponry. i end up spawning in the vicinity of a "grand titan" mech (100 tons, much weaponry), "spider" (35 tons, good weaponry for weight), and "raven" (30 tons superior weaponry). i loose initiative and have to move 1st. i try to maneuver around to the titans flank to try to eventually get a rear shot on its weaker (but still formidable) armor ending up near an unoccupied spawn point. i end up out of range. well, about then a player from previous days returns in the same class of mech he was piloting when he departed a "stalker" (85 tons smorgasbord of weapons).

wouldnt you know it, he spawns near me at the unoccupied spawn point about 2 hexes from me! i get initiative so he has to move 1st. at this point i havent taken any damage nor fired my weapons but i can see the "writing on the wall" being a tiny, lightly armored mech in close to 2 giants that can basically reduce my mech to scrap in 1 round. a previous grinder experience ( and time constraints) and the favorable initiative situation lead me to try a desperation maneuver that mechs with limited flight capability as mine can do known as "DEATH FROM ABOVE" or DFA. its an almost suicidal maneuver where you lift off your mech, maneuver over an enemy mech and shut off your jumpjets, damaging them and yourself (hopefully more them in their more vulnerable head area). 1 reason this is so risky is that physical attack phase occurs after weapons attack phase so you have to survive until then to execute the attack. all the other mechs choose to fire on the stalker and ignore me as they want to see the DFA results. the stalker can only target me with a few weapons due to the angle of my approach and only as a secondary target making it hard to hit me. he misses.

during the firing phase the stalker takes enough damage to cause him to fail a piloting skill check and fall over, making my chances of hitting just that much greater. well i hit, doing minimal damage but displacing the stalker from his hex. the stalker is now pretty heavily damaged but still very much in the fight despite being knocked down.

next round im lucky enough to gain initiative again and the stalker and other mechs in the area must move 1st. the stalker makes his piloting skill check regaining his feet but only with enough movement left for 3 hexes well within my mechs jump range. can anyone see where this is heading? when my turn to move again comes i calmly announce "ok, it worked before so lets try it again, DEATH FROM ABOVE!" prompting another player to ask "so phil. do the clink when you walk?"

this firing phase doesnt go as smoothly for me as another player targets me saying "you had your chance last round" lol. i get lucky again as he doesnt do any catastrophic damage and the amount is less than the magic 20 points that would make me have to do a piloting skill check, messing up my chance at DFA. the other mechs, sensing "blood in the water" all target the stalker doing massive amounts of damage opening his armor in several spots leaving his internal structure vulnerable to "critical hits" that can catastrophic or even deadly. both he and i survive firing phase and remain standing and i again successfully DFA him again hitting him in one of his damaged areas but doing no criticals. he, however, tries to kick the raven with his mech, failing, making his piloting skill check all that much harder. he fails his check because, even to an 85 ton mech, 20 tons of mech crashing into it can knock it down. he falls. when a mech falls in battletech it does damage to itself because of weight and inertia. he damages his left arm for 4 points, and rolls high enough to get 2 critical hits on his internal structure. he checks to find where hitting an almost full ammunition bay blowing his mech up. i survive as my DFA has displaced him into another hex again. i then must depart as its about 20 minutes until toms wgs scenario.

so basically, my tiny 20 ton mech took out a mech more than 4 times its size without firing a single weapon during the whole combat. at that point i had to leave. the moderator gave me a battletech pin for 'having the biggest balls of any stinger ever. lol.

Thats got to be a Record Andy for all those Jams one after the other.
At least they were not Fire Damage!

As the target of at least two of those jams (and possibly three, as he jammed another two times in the following scenario), I lived long enough to learn severable valuable lessons:
    1. Andy can fly
    2. fly on Andy's wing whenever possible
    3. when not possible, organize matters so as to be as far away from Andy as the scenario permits
    4. Keep supplying Andy's ground crew with good scotch

Origins was a great, incredible experience. I will, most definitely, find my way back there in the coming years (if not next year).

    Other statistical anomalies...
    1. at least 4 (and possibly as many as 6) of the lads standing next to BBSuds drew a boom card at one point or another
    2. Trench Wench was herself the victim of double pilot wounds, 3x in two games (six cards!). And in the WW2 Invitational I managed to give 12 damage cards to my opponents, 9 of which were donuts.
    3. A flight of 3 USAS SPADs, lined up perfectly to strike a blow against the Luftstreitkräfte lost two of their number to back-to-back BOOM cards, forever altering the outcome of the sortie and saving our cognac!

Even so, a great time was had by nearly all!

In my Destroy the Destroyer Tanikaze event, I had a player flying an SBD (19 hit points) bravely state that "he was not worried" about the 2x D damage flak he was flying into. For his damage, he drew an 18 and a 0! He was not so nonchalant after that! lol

Two of the double taps were in the invitational, and I gave her at least 3 of those 4 cards (can't remember if I gave her the fourth or not).
Made me nervous, since I was sharing the room with her and Bob (BBSuds).

Great stories guys, gotta love convention gaming!

Just a question for those who played WGS at Origins - did you have the climb rates and top altitude for the new 109K, P-47 and Judy? I have been looking around online and no luck so far.

Yes we had the rates, but I was so high on emotion flying a Bf 109K that do not remember them (shame on me).

Great pictures, Phillip - glad to see I didn't break the camera...

Thanks for playing in my games; I'm glad you had fun - I had fun running them and learned some lessons for next year.

It really was a wonderful time with lots of different folks focused on having a good time flying little planes.

    All the best,
