Thread: Suggestions for 1st repaint projects?

Default Suggestions for 1st repaint projects?

The boys and I are interested in creating our own squadrons(-) in both Allied and German planes....four of each...same model aircraft in each squadron and jasta. We have very limited experience in modding, but are anxious to dive in. Any suggestions on what plane(s) to begin with and any repaint tips from there? We want to remain pretty historically accurate and true to the originals, but still have a little room to personalize our crates. Doing 4 Allied airships and 4 German gives a little role-play leaway as well. Also, being historical means less creativity with the Allied planes, so the Germans wll give us a little more room for self-expression. But where to begin?

Best thing to do is look at what decals are available for complete flights or Jastas
The Col. has some and Dom also does a good line of them. Then see if the aircraft are available to match the decals. Bare in mind the fact that the re hash of the first series is on the way if you can wait for it.

Perhaps the boys could do different aircraft of the same squadron, eg members of Richtofens circus,or, 56 Sqn, then they can gang up on the old man !

Very much what we had in mind! Now...are WoW minis the ones we want for our "repaints"?

I see what you mean about the decals. Guess we need to discuss how tied to historical accuracy we want to be...or do we want to paint up something of our own, yet in loose keeping with historical models.

You can do quite a few of Jasta 11 - the famous 'flying circus' - without having to use any specialist decals. Just scrape (with a thumbnail) the existing decals off the fuselage of the 'Rahn' DR1 and repaint the struts and cowling red. All you need to do is paint the tail and you're good to go. If you want to represent an historical aircraft you have a choice of red, yellow, sky blue or white. There were also several striped tails and lots of aircraft with coloured bands - plain and patterned. For many of the aircraft appearing in photographs, nobody knows the true colour or who flew the aircraft, so if you invent a colour scheme, nobody can tell you it's wrong!

Take a look in my album to see a few of Jasta 11 that I've repainted. I have gone a little further and replaced the straight crosses with the earlier 'Maltese' style, because I wanted to do Lothar von Richthofen's yellow aircraft which crashed before the order was given to repaint the crosses. Then my OCD kicked in and all the rest had to match.

The easiest repaint in the world is probably Manfred von Richthofen's most famous DR1. Just take any DR1 and paint it red!

I'd stick with WoW models to begin with - they come with a movement deck and base for each, plus already have a peg moulded for the flight stand. I've got loads of metal models from Skytrex and Reviresco, but most of them are models not available from WoW yet. Adding a peg to the model is really annoying and fiddly.

Great stuff, John! Thanks! Looks like we're leaning toward Jasta 11 for our German guises. We like the DR.I, but know it wasn't in the war long. They had Pfalz D.III's before that, right? Did the paint those in their "circus" schemes? And I think the idea of sticking with WoW minis makes a lot of sense as well.

Also...what do you think about our Allied guises? I'm hearing 56 SQDRN. Maybe S.E.5's for the later years. And earlier?

Quick list of available aircraft/rough timelines:

Albatros D111 (from Jan 1917), Albatros DV/DVa (from July 1917), Fokker Dr1 (from October 1917, Richthofen and Voss got F1 prototypes a couple of months earlier), Pfalz D111 (from July 1917). All but the Albatros D111 served until the end of the war in frontline German squadrons.
I can E-mail you images of many Jasta 11 aircraft (Albatros' and Triplanes, although John above already has all the Triplane designs covered pretty comprehensively) if you wish, I already made up a PDF a little while back for someone else on here. The Albatros schemes are generally simpler.

The RFC would have Camels and SE5a from July 1917 (56 Sqn had SE5 a few months earlier, suggest using the F deck). DH2s, Sopwith Pups (no official models for either yet) and Nieuports before that.

The French had Nieuport 17 (and similar) from April 1916-late 1917, along with SPAD V11s from late 1916 (no official models yet) and SPAD X111s from April 1917.

As already suggested, I'd take a look at both the Aerodrome Accessories section here and Dom's Decals website. Both do generic decals (useful for replacing national insignia if you are doing extensive repaints) as well as squadron-specific schemes. I've got a few examples of Dom's stuff in my album if you want to see how they look when used by a mere mortal

A generous offer, Lian! And, yes, of course I'd love to see whatever you have on J 11. Thanks! walt

Jasta 15 D-VII's would seem to involve the least amount of work.

No problem, just PM me your e-mail address and I'll get them off to you in the morning (if you haven't done this before on this site, just just click on IRM to the left and you get the option in a popup).
