Thread: Happy Birthday to the Queen

Default Happy Birthday to the Queen

Was watching the news here in the States and see that today is the BD of the Queen (unofficial). So I have to check out YouTube to watch the Trooping of the Colors which I have to say is awesome. So to all our friends in England a toast to the Queen.

The Queen was born on April 21st.
Why is her birthday being celebrated on June 11th ?
Perhaps this is a British thing that we colonists will never understand.

June 11th is the Official Birthday of Her Majesty the Queen. Her actual Birthday is April 21st. A date in June is chosen in the hope that the weather will be fine for any celebrations and the 'Trooping the Colour' ceremony. King Edward VII, who's Birthday was 9th November, first decided to have an Official Birthday in June after 1908. Previously, the celebrations had taken place on the sovreign's actual Birthday.

Best wishes to Her Majesty and also to the Duke of Edinburgh, who was 95 this week.

As with almost everything else in the UK, the answer is our "wonderful" weather - far too wet and / or cold earlier in the year for a good street party

Happy Birthday to HM, watched the trooping of the colours with the Coldstrams, brought back many memories of the parade ground at Harrogate where we did the same for our passing off/graduation parades. At least in June it is usually nice.

What a Glorious spectacle the trooping was. I have just finished watching today's birthday Charity Parade, and add my own felicitations to Her Majesty on this most memorable
    occasion.
    The Queen God bless her.

It is a lovely tradition and I do admire your sense of glory and pride, my British friends.
So stay with us, chaps. And I promise I will even praise your beers.

I saw that explanation on the BBC video so thanks for explaining it to those not aware of it.
