Default WGFG: Fighter Heroes of WW1

    Book Title:
    Fighter Heroes of WW1
    Author:
    Joshua Levine
    ISBN:
    9780007274949
    Category:
    History
    Format:
    Paperback
    Summary:
"The extraordinary story of the pioneering airmen of the Great War" is what it says and that is exactly what you get taking you from the first flights to wars end. This is a fabulous little book punctuated throughout and frequently with quotes and stories from the pilots and crew of the day. So good you can almost hear their voices echo from the past.
But it, read it, enjoy it, it is simply brilliant !

Just have to find his other books in a charity shop now !

Yes, though it is fairly non specific, it's not about individuals but the collective, it's using their recollections to illustrate certain points. Like clearing guns in flight, flying at altitude, dropping spies off, dogfights etc.

I thought this would be a few biographies collected together. What it turned out to be was a history of the aviation element of the first world war. It is told with multitudes of diary and letter exerpts to give a very personal insight to the events, technology advances, and problems encountered in the conflict.

My favorite quote, so far, was a description by a pilot (unattributed) about a Zeppelin shed bombing raid of Dűsseldorf in late 1914, carried out in foggy conditions being like: 'going into a dark room to look for a black cat who wasn't there.' This made me laugh out loud at the time, and still makes me smile now.

So far, this has been a very good read, with lots of personally educating and enlightening discoveries.

Glad it's hitting the mark. I must circle back to it one day.
