Default Hello! Newbie to Wings of Glory .. where to begin?

Hi all! I'm new to this game. I played some XWing and liked it but I enjoy military history alot and thought the Wings of Glory WW1 game would be best to start with. I found a rules and accessories book I'm going to order online... but how do I get started? It seems that duel packs are super expensive now and I don't know how to judge buying balanced planes. I want to start off with at least four, so I can do some 2 vs 2 duels. I don't know what to look for really. Any newbie help is greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the best place on the web to get Wings of Glory info and help.

You could wait a week or few for the reprinted Duel Packs to show up on shelves. They should be out this month.

If you have the Rules and Accessories Pack on order, try getting some mid-war planes. SPAD XIIIs and Sopwith Camels, and Albatros D.Vas and Fokker Dr.Is. Those all flew at the same time, so they are good for pairing up. It also gives you a good variety of maneuver decks to try out. Each plane has different maneuvers, so they all take some getting used to for flying.

Thanks. Are there any threads that help people with proper pairing and balance? In addition when would I add bombers into the mix? Pilot skills sound fun too, and I'm used to having to manage extra rules so anything that could add a little customization interests me too.

Welcome Pat, the amount of new people stopping in to introduce themselves recently is very promising for the game.

Thanks . I really found it because of XWing but XWing started to feel more like Magic the Gathering. Whoever could afford the best min/max point build tends to do better than others. This game looks like it lends itself more towards skilled gamesmanship without needing a ton of specific "upgrades".

Hello Pat, welcome to the game and to the Aerodrome. One thing that is excellent about this game is the fun you will have playing Solitaire / Solo and the learning opportunities which are on offer. Ready for when you do play a live opponent or two!

Some excellent advice on offer already but for extra for the game please take a look at our very own Aerodrome Accessories - AA where stock levels and prices are extremely competitive. Accessories you will find useful as your playing career progresses as this covers fire / damage markers which you fit to aircraft in play. You will also feel like investing more in the game as your career progresses too.

Any further questions and one of us will endeavour to answer them for you. The very best of luck

    Thumbs up

G'day Pat & welcome to the 'drome on behalf of the Pilots who fly in NSW down in Australia.

As others have said you will find everything you need to help enjoy the game available right here on the Forum.

Keith Upton who owns the forum runs the Aerodrome Store here on line & can supply heaps of Aircraft & accessories.
I buy most of my aircraft from him as his prices are extremely reasonable.

Check out what he has available.

Apart from Scouts it is great to have a two seater for each side to allow you to fly Recon or bombing missions.

You might like to check out some of the Scenarios we fly in Campaigns down in the WW1 section.

Incidently X wing was modelled on the Wings of War/Glory card Manoeuvre system !

welcome to the drome Pat!!!! yeah ww1 is the way to go! i mean i like ww2 wings of glory but i much prefer ww1. the duel packs are actually an excellent way to get started since that have all the components for 2-4 players. i started out with 1, got another, than ended up getting the rules and accessories pack to have someplace to keep all the components lol. as far as matching generally the entente and central powers fighters in each series are more or less matched. also theres a complete list of planes available in another thread (dont recall the name for a search, but others can refer you) that also lists what maneuver deck and guns each planes have. just pick 2 sharing the same deck until you get more familiar with them and youll be good to go!

yeah theres a lot of power creep in xwing (and star trek attack wing as well) not to mention DICE !!!!! incidentally the games are similar because fantasy flight at one time was collaborating with nexus (wings of wars previous publisher) until the deal fell through.

Welcome Pat! I'm new too -- I have an earlier version of WoG called Wings of War. It came with cardstock counters for the aircraft so was easier to play almost immediately. I haven't purchased any of the minis yet but I intend to do so. I much prefer the game mechanics of WoW/WoG to X-Wing and Attack Wing.

Any suggestions for first purchases? I have a budget allowing me the Rules and Accessories which I am going to get alongside 4 fighters (camel, spad, Fokker, albatross). I'm buying a play mat too. I am leaning toward two bombers. Or should I get double pilot planes with two machine guns? I mostly will be doing 1v1 and 2v2 player games.

I am leaning in the direction you suggest myself, Pat. Although, instead of a bomber, I'm going to look for two-seaters - one for each side.

(I am probably going to pick up a few more of the old WoW accessories too - just to get the cardstock aircraft for solitaire play)

If you are after a bomber still may I draw your attention to the Ares Games website: www.aresgames.eu where the Caproni CA.3 and Gotha G.V aircraft have now been out of print for some time.

Also the Giants of the Sky have just been listed as OOP too.

If you would like a fair twin-seater fight suggestion so I am not completely the bearer of bad news an Airco DH.4 vs Hannover CL. III fight is good and fair - I have photos of one in my Albums which I should have written an AAR for. Now both of those are still in production.

for starting out id recommend some 2 seaters as they make for a nice change of pace from simply dogfighting. dont get me wrong, im a fan of bombers and like to use them whenever i can but they work better in larger groups and may be difficult to employ for smaller games.

    Welcome from West KY.
One of the things I have yet to see mentioned is that when you by a two seater plane you get a pretty versatile piece of equipment. The 2 seaters can do photo recon, bombing, they were used for spotting for artillery, and even took part in some dogfights. There is also a misdion posted in the Early Doors Campaign where you had to retrieve a spy, usiñg a two seater. As far as getting a true bomber, if you choose to that is up to you. I have only purchased one bomber and that was the Zeppelin Staaken through the Kickstarter program last year. Any other time I do a bombing run it is with one of my two seaters.
