Thread: New Flight Leader Appointed for Leicester Flight

  1. #1

Default New Flight Leader Appointed for Leicester Flight

After being consulted by the Wingco I am very pleased to announce the appointment of John Biggles to the position of Flight Leader for the Leicester Flight.

John is an enthusiastic member who regularly supports our Wings of Glory displays at shows, and is a stalwart of the annual Doncaster event.

Hasten then to the mess, to buy our newly-minted Flight Leader a drink to celebrate. If you can't recognise him, he is the one on the left below.

    Congrats John

Run for your life - there are stupid people everywhere!

Congratulations John ... Another well-deserved promotion in just as many months. Especially glad to see this as it was you who got me into the game after all at Hammerhead 2015 and Hammerhead 2016 was a good laugh too

EDIT: OK, so my geography for England is rubbish. I got confused, cause John lives in Derby?

Well done John , Might want to think about a change of uniform though. You will never get that flag and drum in the cockpit.

Oh and thanks for the drinks

Pity I never put a bet on him being Leicester Flight Leader at the beginning of the season.

Mike John will need a new banner saying Leicester or even better Leicestershire Flight Leader as Derbyshire is a different county altogether. Though they do neighbour one another I will grant you that.

Keep this handy though as I now reckon the appointment of a Derbyshire Flight Leader is actually not far away: The person I reckon is in mind (and I totally support if I am correct) is steadily returning to health.

Just out of interest ... How many Members do we have in Leicestershire? Though you only have two more years tops of me always being in Loughborough (urban myth - I am just there most of the time!) if anybody wants to challenge me to a game

    Thoroughly well deserved!

I'll happily partake of the Port (but with a sneaky Brandy or two on the side!)

I looked for where John lived, and the above map said Derby was in Derbyshire. So, I gapped the Leicesterchire FL thing, and went with Derbyshire. The small red arrows are indicating the county border.

So. Does John live in Derby, Derbyshire, and leads the Leicestershire Flight anyway?

People can get very touchy in the East Midlands when it comes to county borders and where you hail from Mike.
And don't start on who makes the best Pork Pies in the country.

    Paul,
People everywhere can get touchy about all sorts of things. Where you live, and who people think you are, can get pretty messy. Most Canadians don't like to be identified as Americans when they travel the world, as it happens.

    In that regard:
I apologize profusely for any embarrassment or confusion I may have caused. It was completely unintentional, and a result of exceedingly poor knowledge of English geography.

Perhaps, if I actually make it to England for Doncaster, I should have a chauffeur, to make sure I actually get from the airport to the venue? Still working on the finances for that, BTW, so not a sure thing, yet.

Wow ... Just as well I have two years and counting to challenge them all (he wrote after returning from Loughborough via East Midlands Airport!) Had to break journey today to call in at the Aviation Emporium where my 1/400 scale Kalitta Air Boeing 747-200F diecast model landed today. It isn't the exact one I jump-seated on for a day whilst at SFO but a fantastic reminder ...

I will vouch for the fact that though the county borders between Derby and Castle Donington are quite confusing - for starters so many people think that EMA is in Leicestershire yet it isn't and has a DE (Derby) Postcode. Yet due north of Castle Donington which is to the north of EMA there is a sign on Cavendish Bridge which says WELCOME TO NORTH WEST LEICESTERSHIRE! Due direct east of there is Ratcliffe Power Station where one can find the border of this no-man's land with Nottinghamshire.

The sign which will always make me laugh is the one which has been on the A453 just outside East Midlands Airport as one heads towards the M1 ... Welcome to Leicestershire: Tenez a gauche / Fahren am Links. This sign was first installed in 1985 and has been replaced twice since.

For True Territorialism though: Try telling a person from Walsall that they are from Birmingham ...

Thanks for that. Missed this one as I was abroad plane spotting ... So there is a Derbyshire Flight Leader then?

Cannot seem to find Promotions Board so will take your word for it. Well done to whoever scored that one anyway

BINGO ... Found it. Well that came as a total surprize: My only guess is that the person I thought would have occupied that slot must have declined the offer.

    Hi All,
with reference to the Derbyshire/ Leicestershire border.
I live in Leicestershire, as indeed does EMA!
As Leicester is over 20 miles away, and Derby only 10, we are in the Derby postal district.
Just across the Trent (county border) is Long Eaton, post code Nottingham, but actually in Derbyshire.
as a note of interest, Buckingham, county town of Buckinghamshire, has a Milton Keynes post code
This is England, nothing is simple or straight forward!!!!!

Glad you are still with us to tell the tale On our side of Walsall when I lived there (Mellish Road going towards Aldridge) nobody seemed to be all that bothered. However in the opposite direction towards Wedgebury and Wolverhampton ... You were best not even mentioning the B Word!

You think that is bad, John. My brother lives in Rutland but his post town is Stamford in Lincolnshire and his postcode is Peterborough, which is in Cambridgeshire.
