Always sad to lose another Warbird, esp. with a loss of life.

Sam thank you very much for posting. RIP and before today's game I will request a Minutes' Silence in order to mark this unfortunate event.

    Tragic.

Sad to see the plane lost but also losing the pilot is tragic.

From the sound of it: He was trying to get out, and couldn't find the belt release....

I have pictures of that P-47 from the Reading show last year. The plane can be rebuilt but the loss of the pilot is the tragedy.

They made those P-47s tough, still in one piece.

Yes, very sad indeed. My sympathy to all those affected by his death.

P47, I remember J E Johnson writing in 'Full Circle' that it ' Always seemed loath to leave the ground, and always happy to return to it!' - but it was a tough warbird!

very sad. ive seen some pics a jogger captured of it just before and after it hit. in the pic after you can see the pilots arm out of the cockpit holding the front windscreen. its sad that he apparently couldnt get out in time. i saw some closer pics of it being fished out (looks restorable) and theres oil staining coming out of the starboard side of the cowling and just the lower prop blade was bent indicating the engine wasnt turning when it hit.

There was a posting on the FW mail list with a lint to the P-47 piloting instructions. Apparently, ditching was not recommended, and the pilot should be prepared to get out before touchdown
