Thread: Target LONDON!

    Default Target LONDON!

Herewith, the evidence from tonight's impromptu game.

This was a historical scenario based on real events in the summer of 1917 where several British squadrons were deployed along the Franco-Belgian coast with the objective of intercepting the daylight Gotha raids on London and the south east of England.

Our game saw Sopwith Camels of N0.3 Sqn RNAS (Naval Three) scrambling to attack two German stragglers as they neared the British capital. With the Hun raiders entering the map from a random direction, the defending fighters had a lot of ground to make up and the Gothas were already making their way along the Thames estuary, intent on bombing the East London docks.

The Gothas make a magnificent sight as the approached their target in line astern, running the gauntlet of London's AA batteries - you could almost hear Ride of the Valkyries in the background (especially after John played it on his smart phone

One British pilot got too close however and collided with the tail of the second Gotha, and spilled fuel from a ruptured line set the camel ablaze. A bursting anti aircraft shell had wounded the Gotha's rear gunner and the raider was last seen moving away to the north east, trailing black smoke. Now out of fuel, 3 sqn's remaining aircraft were forced to look for emergency landing fields while the second Hun raider showed a clean pair of heels and headed back across the channel.

This was the first time we had played with the heavy bombers and everyone agreed it was a most enjoyable game.

In the days before RAF Fighter Command and sectorization when London was THE priority target yes I agree - in fact wasn't this where combat radius of an aircraft was first considered and used tactically? This for those unfamiliar with the term is the one-way range (and loiter time if required) over a target location of an aircraft type before it is required to refuel. Navigation was also quite simple: Follow those four tracks southward. As both the London and North Eastern Railway and the Midland Railway were frequently quadruple-tracked on their way towards London from Yorkshire & some stations still had names painted on their roof.

From The War the Infantry knew, Capt J C Dunn (1938)

"January 27th [1915] - The Kaiser's birthday. There was a sharp frost in the night. The Germans fired hardly a shot. Our artillery bombarded 100 yards of the German front line for three-quarters of an hour: ' a fair hell, knocked everything to blazes'. We followed with two bursts of rapid small-arms fire just before, and after two o'clock. The German infantry replied, firing high, and their artillery fired on HQ. We had 1 man killed and 2 wounded. Two good stories of the shoot came round to us after relief. While our guns were giving the Prussians opposite us hell, the Saxons opposite the Middlesex applauded the hits. Later they shouted across, "We're being relieved by Bavarians tonight. Give us time to get out and then shoot the ----------'s!""

Looks like Yorkshire doesn't have the monopoly on congenital dislike of anyone from the wrong side of the county boundary.

I am trying to remember where I read that Britain's officially least disliked county is Wiltshire ... Followed a close second by Devon! How these conclusions were derived I have no idea but I do remember that it was online somewhere - will find and post link when I do.
