    Cool Bond, James Bond

It looks like we are headed for another person to be James Bond. Daniel Craig has turned down a two movie deal worth a reported £68million, between $100-129million US, sighting a knee injury sustained while filming Spectre.
Names being thrown around to replace him are Tom Hiddleston, Aidan Turner, Jamie Bell, and Idris Elba. Also, just saw a report that someone has thrown Gillian Anderson's name in the hat to play Bond as well.
Any thoughts or ideas. I mean it is perfect pub and beer hall talk.

Idris Elba ... Would make the best Bond of the names within that selection including Gillian Anderson. Reckon it is time after the Australian Irish and of course Scottish James Bonds that there have been down the line to experiment with the idea of a Black James Bond. Not being sexist but I reckon that placing Gillian Anderson in the role would just break the mould too far. Would be too hard to accept and an idea that I reckon would prove too hard to sell.

Interesting thread Dale - now this is BOUND to ignite an interesting discussion

PS - Bond, Samantha Bond who played Moneypenny used to be a pin-up of mine in the mid-90s: She has seen the inside of my kit bag you know!

Totally agreed on Idris Elba - his latest film, Bastille Day, was basically a two hour showreel of just how well he'd suit the part of Bond

No but James Bond has flown Little Nellie in You Only Live Twice as well as an Aero L-39 Albatross dolled up as a MiG in Tomorrow Never Dies ... But he also ends up flying Bell 206B Jet Ranger G-BAKS in For Your Eyes Only in the opening sequence which ends with Blofeld in a wheelchair being dropped down a chimney stack:

    MR BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOND ... KERRASH!!!

Unpowered flight has involved a hang-glider in Live and Let Die and at least three parachuting exploits.

The only name I know out of those would be Gilliam Anderson's. I started this as a way to find out what others knew or thought.
I do realize that the name James Bond, in the movies, was supposed to be a code name. The oldest Bond movie I have seen, and I have lost my copy of it was, Casino Royale, done by CBS, an episode of the dramatic anthology series Climax!. It was a TV show from 1954 AND James Bond was an American agent for Combined Intelligence. Barry Nelson played Bond, Peter Lorre was Le Chiffre, Micheal Pate was Clarence Leiter. Bond was often called Jimmy in this adaptation.
Clarence Leiter is "Jimmy's" British contact at the Casino.
The plot is pretty much the same as the 2006 version of Casino Royale.
I still find this version funny when I think about it. And the 1967 version of Casino Royale silly.

Honestly: Judi Dench's M had it right in _Goldeneye_: "You're a [...] dinosaur... a relic of the Cold War". It is past time to let Bond rest.

Me, I'm waiting for the second _Kingsman_ movie -- just by the posters, I have a pretty-clear idea of where the plot's going.... >:)

For me there will never be a better Bond than Sean Connery!

I'm sorry, Bond deserves to be let Rest in Peace. The Equalizer, the original with Edward Woodward not the Denzel Washington knockoff that should've been "Man on Fire 2" instead, would have been a better continuation/epilogue to the James Bond story than the direction the film franchise has gone.

I've never been able to get past the fact that Britain's top agent/assassin travelled the world under his own name, with a face known to all, and didn't get bumped off within 10 minutes of arriving at his scheduled hotel!
    Just barmy.

Good action scenes, some great actors but an on-going plot hole you could fly a space shuttle through!
I laugh in the face of danger - then I hide until it goes away!

If I recall he did try and use a number of aliases such as Peter Franks (Diamonds Are Forever) and Norman St John-Smythe (A View To A Kill) but they ultimately never worked so I wholeheartedly agree with that!

Another thing which carried on down the James Bond franchise was his Universal Exports identity card until it was last seen in For Your Eyes Only.

Yes Bond was a dinosaur. The attitudes portrayed in a lot of the movies after Roger Moore were attitudes that had changed but never changed in the movies. Also the attitude of M and Q never changed because either one of them could have "retired" Bond and didn't.
As far as Bond going into places and using his real name, I never had any problems with that. Think about it this way. The "World's number one" Secret Agent comes to town looking for the "Villain". What do you do? Kill him and have every other country in the world send theirs after you, or...do you do your best to complete your plans and prove that you are better than Mr. James Bond 007, licensed to kill?
For me the Ego boost, and that is what it would be to any megalomaniac, would be to beat James Bond at his own game. Be the one who completes his plans to steal all the gold in Ft. Knox, close off the oil pipelines in the middle East, or control the Media outlets worldwide.
It wouldn't matter what I did as long as I beat James Bond and then thumb my nose at the World and say, " You sent your best to stop me and he couldn't, so leave me alone!!! Muahahahaha."

Henry Cavill has been in the running before - think he'd like another crack at it but maybe tied in with the Superman thing.

Idris Elba would be a great Bond but Tom Hiddleston would guarantee my wife buying the Blu-Rays!

Bond is truly one of the great Karma Houdinis--the problem is it tends to boomerang onto ladies who get too close to him instead.

If I had a sister and 007 were to try dating her, I'd bust a mag full of caps in his arse just to keep her safe from that.

I have a friend who is a great movie buff and he was flabbergasted to hear that anyone other than a white male was being considered. He said it was so against Ian Fleming's books. I just opened and closed my mouth whilst staring at him

    My vote would Idris Elba.

Well, considering when the books were written....

But if Nick Fury can be played by Samuel L. Jackson....

Do not get me started on the Sgt Fury and the Howling commandos crock. SLJ does a good character but Nick was white with red hair. They did a real good job on Dum Dum though, Bowler hat and striped shirt and all.

There's some characters where one can get away with altering the race of the actor (for ex.: What _Iron Man 3_ did with "The Mandarin" was absolute evil genius); there's others where... well, about the only reason I can see for having James Bond played by Idris Elba is "we want to remake _Live and Let Die_ so it doesn't look quite so PATENTLY *&^%$#!ING LUDICROUS"...." (James Bond in Harlem is almost as bad as Will Smith playing James West -- this is not "suspension of disbelief"; this is "hanging disbelief by the neck 'til it be Dead, Dead, Dead". Or, if we go the other direction: Black Panther as a white guy -- NOPE.)
