Last Monday evening 3 out of our 4 intrepid airmen gathered at the Starick aerodrome (AKA the dining room table) for another night of fun and mayhem.
We had previously decided that Baxter would bring his Staken and that we would whip up a quick and dirty scenario around that. On the night we agreed to fly the Staken in 'automatic mode' while the 3 of us would try our best to knock it out of the sky. We decided on 3 Bristol Fighters as worthy adversaries and agreed on 2 house rules:
- The Staken would stay on the mats, even if that meant ignoring the movement card that was turned over.
- If the Staken drew the 'Boom' card it would automatically suffer half its maximum damage.
And so the night began with the Staken poised at one end of the table and the 3 Bristols at the opposite end.
One of the Bristols (piloted by yours truly) bored in at full throttle. It took out the nose gunner but was punished by the side gunners as it passed alongside the Staken - ouch! The other two Bristols, flown by Baxter and Windy Jack, headed off to the right to try and get behind the bomber.
Once the other two had managed to hook around the Staken, an exchange of fire resulted in it drawing the 'Boom card' (see house rule 2 above).
This was the beginning of the end - the first Bristol over-extended and just couldn't get back into the fight, the Staken was shot down 4 rounds later with one of the attackers being only 1 damage point away from joining it on the ground in tatters.
A fun night with our new addition to the Hun bomber fleet.
Next Monday night we should be up to full strength (ie 4 pilots) and we intend to repeat the excercise with Baxters Handley Page 0/400.
