So, inspired in part by Richard Schwab's home made clouds in the WWII game at Williamsburg Muster, my lovely bride (pbuh) decided to set to and make some for us. Materials used were batting (for soft toys, pillows etc) from the craft store and bases made from Dollar Tree straws and plastic wine glasses. The effect is quite good, but how do they effect game play?

We use three basic flight levels for our simplified altitude rules, so clouds are assumed to be at level 2 (medium altitude)

You can fly under or over a cloud with no effect

No firing into or out of a cloud.

Flying into a cloud makes you disoriented, therefore discard your next planned maneuver card and draw another at random from your deck, and play this. If it is a climb card, use your model's card and place in on top of the cloud. You could pop out anywhere!

We play tested this rule in tonight's game and it works very well! Clouds don't move in the time frame of our games but you could easily decide a random wind direction and move them one ruler distanc at the start of every turn. What does the esteemed membership of the mess think?

I think they look great. And the price is definitely right.
Methinks I might give them a try ...

Great looking clouds and a great idea with wine glasses stands!

    Thumbs up

Really great effort & idea of the wine glass base.
I use the same "stuffing" for my clouds but have just been plonking them on the mat.
    Must adapt your stand idea.

    Rep sent!

I'd say your bride has done you proud Stuart - that's a brilliant idea ! I wouldn't move the clouds in a game as the relative speed to the aircraft is so slow but if you wanted to I'd suggest you do it as a width of a ruler rather than the length, or, the clouds might be overtaking you !

Great to see someone else using clouds!

Clouds are a staple of all the games I put on at shows now, and they attract more comments and interest than the minis!

I don't move the clouds in my games - too much else to do, and always novices hurtling around, so I don't want to "move the goalposts" as it were. Also the planes themselves would be subject to wind effects, so it is easier to just let it slide.

Having clouds move across a table, obscuring a target, then revealing it, does attract me, however................if all the players were up for it. This would prevent the usual bombing scenario "run at full speed straight at the target, drop bombs, run for home" since the players would have to wait for the cloud to clear to allow bombing (or dive below it, into the flak!). Multiple potential targets, with only one of them secretly selected in advance by the bombers, would prevent the defenders from knowing which target to defend, and when the bombers might make their move...................................
I laugh in the face of danger - then I hide until it goes away!
