Yup -- the lead bird was an A; the giveaway is the guns in the nose (below the prop-hub level, unlike a P-40). I think the later one was an A-36 Apache, the dive-bomber/ground-attack model of the P-51, which shared most of its features and specs with the A-models.

Same here. Especially as both Packard-engine (three bladed prop) and Merlin-engine (four bladed prop) variants of the Mustang feature in this video. Only thing we are not told is where all of these have originated from: Are all of these from the US? I am aware of one P-51D Mustang which is operated by OFMC (Old Flying Machine Company) at Duxford here in the UK but cannot see it here.
The Last Roundup: Gathering of Mustang Legends here in Columbus Ohio, 2007. I think there were something like 80 Mustangs there, all in flying condition. The most amazing airshow I've ever been to, or will ever go to. You can Google pictures of it, and there are tons of videos on YouTube, Mustangs galore.

I typed in Gathering of Mustangs and Legends, and found a post airshow book that listed 74 Mustangs in attendance. I'm pretty sure they all flew in, none of them were static display Mustangs.80 Mustangs!!!

Do you realize that video alone has more firepower than some *nations'* air forces?
I have the huge full-color commemorative book and DVD set from the Last Roundup. Utterly amazing! However, the video posted in this thread tears the DVD footage to pieces. I found out about the event a year or two after the fact and am consequently very envious of those who were able to attend.
I noticed the video features "Hell 'er Bust". She is home based in Boise and I have seen her up close numerous times. I always hoped to get a ride for the nominal fee. But sadly, she is a single seater. The owner Mark has another P-51D named "Diamondback" I believe. I have only seen her twice as it has been undergoing some restoration work. But that one is a two seater....muhahahaha. One of these days, this bucket list item will be crossed from my list.
Back to the show for a minute, there was suppose to be even more aircraft in attendance, but some couldn't make it due to bad weather. Also, at least one plane came from the UK. It was taken apart, crated up, shipped to the U.S. and reassembled for the airshow. They probably did the same to get it back home.
