    Default Avro Lancaster

    Greetings,

currently I wonder wether to buy an Avro Lancaster (after buying a Spitfire and a Beaufighter) or not. After checking the miniature (lovely) on the Ares site I'm a bit confused regarding the armament. The Wikipedia article states that the Lanc's front and dorsal turret armament were the same, and that the tail turret was heavier armed. But the airplane's base reads "A" for the front and rear firing arc and "B" for the dorsal turret. Just a printing error or is this made on purpose?

And as always, thanks for any help.

Unfortunately a missprint on the base and the plane card:

I love the Avro Lancaster miniature.

OK, than there is "just" a misprint on the base and the airplane card, but the miniature is fine (including the four guns in the tail turret)? I can live with that, even if it's a shame. Anyways, thanks for the link and the tons of info, Sven.

    One more question:

Are there any special missions/scenarios for utilizing the Lanc Bomber? If I recall correctly, there are only the (official) Dambuster scenarios, but no "normal" bombing missions (beside the standard bomb-this-target-for-VPs-and-get-the-hell-out-of-here scenarios).

Me too! I have a few gathering dust, working through the formation/missions for around 10 of them . . . my game table is 40" x 120" so l like lots of things going on, flak, interceptors, cover fighters make for a great event for several days play(?), still have a Dam coming together in the shop, 40" wide so far . . .

Lancs are definitely not my cup of tea, Dennis. No nightfight rules, too fast even for Bf 110, playing them is no fun at all, just managing tokens . I am sorry for that ARES, but my negative attitude toward this particular mini is well known here. Happy not to invest any money in that product. More enjoyable minis are to appear soon.

BTW: Who can explain to me just one reason to publish Lanc, but not a Mossie miniature ?

Lancasters flew singly at night to a target, bombed it and flew home. That was the standard mission profile. If you want ideas for 'special raids', I suggest that you research the activities of 617 Squadron but they were a special unit, who carried out precision raids with special bombs on V1 launch sites, the Tirpitz, bridges, tunnels etc.. They also flew in precise formation to and fro over the English Channel dropping 'window' on the night before D-Day to fake the radar image of a fleet approaching Calais.

That is EXACTLY what I'm looking for! Thank you so much, David.

And it can't be true, Andrzej, a miniature that beautiful MUST have a purpose in the game!

Remember that the Lancs should be using slow speed, since they aren't going flat out all the time. And with a bombload, they probably should be slow until they drop.
So the Lanc will go 8.75cm/card and the Bf-110 will go 12.7cm/card.

You are correct Karl, but I can not beat the bl...y memoir of mine when I was chasing a loaded Lanc in my Bf 110 nightfighter through one mat width in a one ruler distance with barely a chance to shoot at it once or twice. It reached the target and bombed it anyway. Frustrating. Of course if we had had a 2 metre long mat I would have finally caught up with the bomber, but where is the fun?

I think for bomber missions the attackers (German fighters) should start closer, ie 2 rulers, from the formation.

I also developed a night fighting set of rules for bomber formations and searchlights. I'll try and dig out the link and post asap.

    I'm very interested in these.

    I love bomber in WW2.
But I only use them, except the smaller more nimble ones, as fixed moving targets and then I have fun with fighters attacking or defending them.

Yes, automated movement of the heavies is the right solution. Then they are playable much better.

You really got a trauma as a result of this mission.

Yes the bombers went fast speed in this mission and they went directly in direction of the city when they appeared on the map.

    We brought down 3 Lancs. (Dan-Sam 2x me 1x)

...and yes, the City was bombed.

Next time they'll fly slow maneuvers my friends, I promise.

I have two scenarios written for Avro Lancaster B III aircraft at home: When I get back there and after a rest I'll dig them up - they may be of some use anyway.
