The sound of the bellowing Mercedes engine had barely faded when it was replaced by that of the Don R as it bounced across to the middle of the field where the canister and streamer lay. Just as quickly it was brought to the Top Office where it was soon opened by Uncle.
"Some good news Ben, looks like Cross made it after all, a bit banged up by the sound of it but he's alive and in hospital for a while before he goes to a POW camp."
"That is good news, sir. I really thought we'd lost him. He saved my bacon I reckon".
"Yes, you were about to tell me all about it when Fritz turned up - do carry on."
"Well, as you know sir, after the dawn patrol I got refuelled and went straight back out for a poke about over the front. I'd no sooner crossed he lines when I saw an RE8 seemingly having a hard time of it with a Hun not far off so I decided to stick my oar in and see if I couldn't help the chaps out."

"Everything seemed tickety-boo so I made a bee line straight for them, more or less, then went after the Hun. Well, I over cooked it and he slipped past without either of us getting a shot but when I looked over my shoulder to see where he'd got to there were two more of the blighters coming at me and the Harry Tate was heading for Hunland having dropped whatever was smoking as he did so."

"The beggars" murmured Uncle "it was a trap !"
"Exactly so, sir, and I'd waltzed right into the middle of it like a damned rookie. It was that smoke that sold me on it I swear ! Anyway, I was in a bind and no mistake but I managed to wrong foot them; as they came roaring in I reefed her hard right then tried to roll round behind them; thought I was going to get on the leader who'd drawn me in to this mess but misread his next move completely and ended up out on my own,"

"He wasn't the only one sir, Cross had moved in to cover my tail as I cut the other pair off at the pass so to speak, I latched onto one - had number four on its nose - and gave it a couple of good bursts before my guns jammed"

    Another trap that backfires
The Germans really is in need of something better than the Albatross.
Great AAR and a well told story

Well done Dave. That will teach those trecherous Huns getting all tricky. Poor Albatros, even a set trap won't work against a flight of Bulldog Camels.

Thanks P-G, first time out for my boys in the D.Va, been managing with the D.III up to now - it is quicker but still a bit of a bus up against the Camel. The Germans dealt out some big cards too, my chaps were lucky to get away with just one loss I thought.

What a great read for my Sunday morning.
So much to comment on ...

    1) Love the "banter" as the story is told
    2) Great story line
    3) Interesting clouds - not seen their like before (not that I recall anyway)
    4) Great looking smoke effects
    5) Dave playing on Ares maps and not plain surface
    6) Well played and documented - terrific ending to the Early Doors* (been meaning to ask where that title came from)

    * Broke On Through and Lit My Fire You're definitely a "Back Door Man"

    Thumbs up

Great story to support a good "Ding Dong" punch up there Dave.
Top effort from young Morrow & really pleased to see Cross survived the big boom!

    Early Doors
    1. BRITISH informal: early on, especially in a game or contest.
"you should try to wind up their star player early doors"

A bit of colloquial English Pete !

The clouds are home made years ago - cd disc with a plastic coaster on top as a base, acrylic rod that runs through some packaging for a laptop bag (a laminate foam type) cut and shaped to make a cartoon affect cloud. The top spins on the rod so you can move it to place models, the cloud grips the rod but slides up and down easily so that you can adjust the height. I did a thread but the pics were lost in the crash.

Well fought Dave. This scenario is proving a bloody affair all over.

Not wrong Carl, this has potential of going either way - I will be interested to see some Fokkers in the mix to see if that makes a difference.

It would have been nice to see some Dr1s as topcover.
They might give the Camel a run for the money.

What! You want better odds than a sprung trap and a four to three advantage with a delay on the arrival of two of the Brits Per.
Then my scenarios are not for you my boy.

Especially Albatros vs Camels! The ambush was truly set on the Germans as my poor pilots all were shot down.

Sorry chaps. Just noticed the auto corrector had changed the title. Should have read the "Lost Pfalz." not the Last Waltz.
