Thread: Communication. What and how?

    Default Communication. What and how?

As I experiment with the aspects of using lead/wing pairs in games it raises the question: what level of communication is allowable between players on the sane side regarding maneuvers? In a pre radio world only hand and plane ( rock your wings) signals would have been possible. How are you simulating that restriction?

    There's a sane side in war ?
There should be no discussion between pilots once the game starts, some allow hand signals between those in formation but once the maul starts you're on your own !

Something that's strictly prohibited is the information about planed maneuvers, altitude changes, special damages etc.

We allow general comments like: I'm going for the black Fokker, for example.
    Voilą le soleil d'Austerlitz!

I tend to allow players to use simple comms like: Right, Left, Straight, Climb, Dive. Nothing with speed or more precise maneuvers.

I did try Very signals with coloured pipe cleaners for major instructions like attack, head home etc, but much like the real War no one took a blind bit of notice so I gave up.

This has been discussed a few times, and I like the answer in this thread, using a replica plane engine while playing:
What are the limits of team work and communication?

Impractical, but realistic, if players aren't clear on why they can't talk between planes in flight. Personally, it is a wonder a pilot could think, let alone fly and fight, with the noise and distractions (caster oil and exhaust fumes).

This thread provides some hand signals that might be useful, too:

A number of German two seater float planes (HB W-12, HB W-29, etc.) had wireless transmitters for sending sightings of enemy submarines and surface vessels to the nearest naval base or ships. Fewer aircraft had wireless receivers since they weighted quite a bit more. I don't see how sending and receiving Morse code messages in combat would be useful.

I did see a comment somewhere that Belgian FBA Type H flying boats had wireless telephones. So, if you had two of those in a game communication might be permitted.
