Default Giants Over Aschefurt - The Reprisal

An even small number of chaps got together at TWWS this past Sunday to try out the British Giants with a HP O/400 reprisal raid on the fictional German town of Aschefurt... a small town famous for production of Bratwurst before the war and a fitting target to strike a blow at the heart of the enemy's morale...opposing them is a mixture of DR1's that did surprisingly well ! Here are some of the edited highlights for your viewing pleasure:

All in all a great day of action !
These figures aren't necessarily accurate but I think it went along these lines:
We dropped 6 of the 8 bombers, 3 dropped bombs on target, only 2 got away.
Me, Mark and Elijah lost a plane each, Andy & Ian lost a couple and Brian, well, he lost a few !

Thanks to all who played and made it possible and a special well done to Elijah

Very good action. I love the billowing smoke markers. I too have recently acquired the 0/400 and have reproduced the map so that the playing surface can be as long as ones wishes!

Oh, and from whence came those beautiful blazing gun measuring sticks. Have I been living under a rock, because I have not seen them before and would love to get some.

They're here in the files section Willi

And here is a close up of me smoking - it's a craft 'pipecleaner' wound round a pen or similar to create a short fat smoke effect.

    Great AAR, Flash!

The Fokkers delivered an excellent show and dealt out a lot of damage before this - series of Boom cards - decimated them.

Another point I realised step by step know, is that the RFC units are well informed about the Achilles' heel of each German combat operation: Bratwurst-Fabriken, trains full of Apfelstrudel, important Sauerkraut warehouses. (see Triples)

God knows where this unfortunate spy hides, that gave away all those important informations to the Entente powers.

She moves amongst the highest in the land - you know her name ...

The Dr1's did surprisingly well, for some of us at least, but if you get too far behind you cannot catch back up to the bombers. That's why you'll see me turning in close behind them, and if you get in the blind spot like I did you can stay there blazing away with impunity until they drop !

Of course, now we realise that the Bratwurst skins are being used in the production of Zeppelins, this can be considered a double blow to the German war effort !

Most Excellent. Your smoke markers are the most impressive I have seen yet! I love the machine gun measuring sticks! Was that a download or did you fabricate them?

Someone certainly seemed to have secreted a bullet magnet in my DR1's yesterday - if it wasn't fire, it was pilot wound or boom (or some combination of the three!). I lost four planes to those pesky HP's

    Thumbs up

Well that game was certainly action packed!
Looked like great fun with waves of H-P's & tons of Fokkers.
Terrific pics & report Dave. Great stuff.

Not sure my table is big enough to handle more than one or two.
Love the black billowing smoke - very effective.

And all those BOOMs make me feel right at home

We played over 3.5 mat widths Pete, 3 would be enough, if you have a table that big you could do this, maybe on a smaller table if you tweaked the plane movement with a 'fully loaded' speed (ie play a stall each turn).

Good to see we were not the only HP raid going on at the weekend.
There are a lot of innovative things in that game Dave, which I hope to be taking on board.
    Thanks for posting this.

Excellent report and love looks like a fun game for all!! For the waves of bombers did you set a certain turn for them to come on ahead of time or wait until the previous wave was wiped out? Right now in my group, I am the only one who owns an 0/400.

We usually have a mat width between waves Joe, we've found that gives us a decent gap between them. The first wave tends to get the chop pretty quick but the subsequent waves do progress toward the target, the third and fourth can make it, if they're lucky !

Elijah had a great afternoon and related many tales of daring-do to the WRAF's back at base , who seemed suitably impressed. Just to set the record straight, the only reason Eli lost a plane was the fact that I flew straight into the back of him and he pulled a boom card, he was not very impressed with this and spent much of the next few turns asking if he was allowed to shoot me instead of the HP's

One other question for you on this - I would like to try a similar mission tomorrow night with my group. Did you use automatic movement for the bombers (as included with the bombers - i.e random draws but remove 1 out of three turn cards, etc.) or did you just have them flying straight, OR, were they controlled by a player.

    thanks!!

    Joe

We have done both Joe but this one we just flew straights, it's predictable but easier to play when using multiple aircraft.

thanks Dave - I will give it a go that way. We have 3 playing so I am thinking 2 planes each and the bombers fly straight. My friends like to play with altitude so I am thinking I will start the bombers off at Altitude 5. They will descend to Alt 2 when they reach the end of the second map (take 3 dives instead of straight) to drop their bombs on the target. I will check the distance for the 3 dive maneuvers before the game and make sure I shouldn't have them start diving earlier. I am also thinking of rolling a d6 each maneuver turn and if the result is a 6, the bomber will take a dive card instead of straight for one card out of 3 that turn. If the bomber reaches Alt 2 before the 3rd map in this way, then he will stay at 2 to get to the target. I figure this will give a little un-predictability factor into the bomber movement. If I can manage some photos I will try to post an AAR.
