Thread: My Gimbal Installation Method

    Default My Gimbal Installation Method

I received my gimbals in the mail from Aerodrome Accessories. Now I just needed to figure out a good way to install them.

I was planing on gluing the ball part into the plane, and mounting the ring part on a stand like Col. Hajj suggests. I even ordered a bunch of extra ball bearings so I could switch out all my minis, and future minis with the ringed pegs. But I couldn't bring my self to drill into my minis, so I opted for the following solution.

I wanted a way to give the most realistic hinge point while maintaining the size of the peg, so the plane would be at the same height as a plane without a gimbal. Also so it would be obvious what altitude the plane was at if I ever decided to use the altitude rules. This is a highly technical mechanical drawing of my plan:

All I need to do was to put the gimbal inside the peg.

Here it is on a stand, next to a normal stand:

Here it is with aircraft on the stands (do the heights look the same?):

After a small amount of time I was able to put together eight gimbals:

It is even strong enough to hold 2-seaters in position:

And now I can use them for both my WWI and WWII minis. (I don't have my WWII minis yet, so I had to use an aircraft from a later period):

Brilliant, you have taken my idea to the next phase of perfection and at the same time ironed out the problem of the extra leverage vs the weight of a two seater. I take my flying helmet off to you Bryan. The tool set was very amusing too.

Nice write up -- and humorous; had me laughing! Now I need to get off my duff and get the gimble mounts as well.

    Cheers!

Nice one matey, very informative, will use your method myself if that ok.
Only thing though, I know it is the Red Baron and can only be good for the alies but is not that contest a little one sided contest ?

I realize I didn't really show how it is done. I made another thread here: http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/sho...1848#post31848 that shows how I do it in a more detailed way.

The glue I use is Zap-A-Gap medium thickness because that's all I could find. But you should try to use as thick of a super glue as possible.

    And who won the dogfight?

Almost forgot. Does your mounting system hold the plane as tight as the system with the bearing glued to the plane, with out the plane sometimes flopping over?

I have just done my last 8 aircraft on this new system and it works fine. It will even cope with some of the lighter two seaters, and I havn't roughed up the surface of the gimbal yet.

Actually, this is the link: http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/sho...1848#post31848.
You would think I would know how to put a link into an article, being as how I'm a computer programmer and all.

Great tutorial Bryan. My question is how does this work on the Shapeways and the metal planes?

You have to fit them with a peg !

shapeways models are very light, so I drill a little hole in a fuselage and glue the ball. Even two seaters can easily bank without danger of falling to a side.

I'm glad this got bumped. I hadn't seen what was actually involved in putting the gimbal mounts on the pegs.

Used this for all my gimbal mounts and it worked a dream.

    http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/sho...1848#post31848.

I have 2 Skytrex SE5a's they now have a plastic peg, using the system above to reduce the size, glued to the bottom so it fits the support peg system too.

Myself, also. I wasn't in the 'drome then, and missed it in my first sweeps through.
