Thread: Pour me some Zeppelin medals! Yeah!

Default Pour me some Zeppelin medals! Yeah!

There are projects and then there are project projects. Some things come along with others, these sure did. Whilst web searching Zeppelin things I ran across a number of pins and medals from WWI Zeppelin crews and had to have one, or two! But they are not cheap, but my elves are!

Here they have found a nice photo of some of the medals, and after showing them how to use the heat hardening plastic clay in the art bin, they produced these.

Note my patented clay baking surfaces, you may remember them from college days! Yep the frozen pizza baking paper trays! A few bits of fluff . . .

In came the pouring elves and you can guess what has happened!

Yeah, silicone mold, and pouring, pouring, pouring!

    And more pouring . . .

This gets kinda silly after a while. Then it gets seriously silver!

Now to add a clip/pin device on the back and find just the right hat . . .

    Oh c'mon Dave!
Tell us how to contact these Elves!
I'm rotten with envy. I only have a pair of hands and one of them has a heavily cut thumb...

This is once again an amazing display of skill and invention!

    You do rock.

These turned out wonderfully, David - like that's any surprise...

I could see a couple of them in my future...they would be fun to paint and shade and generally gussy up!

Thanks for always taking things to the next level - it's such an inspiration

    Always the best,
    Matt

Funny you should mention that, does anyone have the dimensions of the original? Looking around for other medals, they are super easy to make in resin . . . I've seen some of the gys doing them in card stock . . .

You should try to make copies of the medals awarded here at the Aerodrome. I would be interested in copies of the ones that I have earned. However, finding ribbon to match the wonderful designs that Sue has made might be difficult. I'm sure Keith wouldn't have any trouble selling copies of the medals that at least 20 people have earned.

You say that like it's a bad thing. Of course, those generals would probably sink in water, but Dave's medals would be resin so we would float.

Dave, I think a real Blue Max is about three inches across.

Years ago there was a company making replica Blue Max, Victoria Cross, Iron Cross, and other medals, and they were fairly reasonably priced. They're probably not still in business, but I'll rummage around and see if I can find the information again.

I snagged a repro Blue Max years ago and have it framed with my other genuine medals down in my 'man cave' section of the basement - it framed up nicely...there was a book that came out several years ago called Prussian Blue that is a history of the Blue Max - quite expensive but awfully nice - great color photos and history of the medal and its variations...

This is a lovely project, Dave - you never cease to amaze!

    Always the best,
    Matt
