Default Reporting For Duty from Brisbane QLD.

Hello everyone my name is Danielle and I am 27 years old. I am starting to learn the game from scratch. As in my WW1 rules and accessories pack is still on it's way in the post from England!

I became interested in the game as my Great Grandfather served in the AFC in Europe during WW1. I want to learn and know more about the AFC / RFC and what my Great Grandfather experienced during those dark and distant days. So I hope to take up playing in his memory. What I am looking forward to most is the way I have been told that you don't have to be a pilot or you don't have to know lots about history in order for the game to work. I am definitely looking for a sharp contrast to my day-job which can get very dull at times because I work as a manager in a call centre.

I was introduced to the game by ... Aha? After a brief discussion I promised him that I would downplay this as he says that the last time he introduced a friend to this website we didn't have much luck with him ... Oh dear! But this explains why what I need to get started is on it's way in the post from England. Because this person is 9,445 nautical miles away: I gather he is a well known Member anyway and I will also say a quick thank you to him for showing me where I needed to write all this.

Now I have been fully activated I look forward to meeting everyone as I enter the wonderful world of Wings of Glory / WGF.

Well you are most welcome here Danielle.
I don't think you will be disapointed. This is the best forum on the net.

BTW I just walked in and edited this. You need to tighten security in this day and age!

Welcome to the Aerodrome Danielle from Derbyshire in England. You are indeed entering the wonderful world of Wings of Glory and it is good to have you on board.

You definitely don't have to be a pilot or a historian to play the game successfully but you do have to be a keen collector when it comes to how many are available for the WW1 game! Fortunately you have Xen (Evan) in Australia when it comes to this side of the game and he is a Seller / Stockist as well as a field expert. There is also AA via the Aerodrome for great prices and reliable service - accessed via link at the top of the page.

Anything you need just ask - this is a friendly as well as a Global community who value newcomers & Fairly New Players. Your Great Grandfather would be proud of what you are doing In Memory of him

Welcome to the 'Drome, Danielle, from half way around the world in Connecticut! As P-G mentioned, this is a great place... full of helpful, knowledgeable folks who love the game, era, time period, and pretty much everything else that comes with it! Please don't hesitate to ask any questions... someone here will have the answer.

Welcome to the Aerodrome Danielle. As stated above, this is a great place. I think it as a second home and I'm sure others do too. Some maybe a first!

    Hi Danielle,

Welcome to the game. So you really needed another way to stay poor

The joy for a lot of us is in the miniatures but you can just play with the cards. As Tonx said this site has a store and although you will pay more with our poor exchange rate the prices are still very good and the service is outstanding. Do not forget the Winter Con in Canberra in July either where we congregate for a weekend of mayhem in the skies. At those Canberra conventions a table for our game is usully set up by Zoe Brain who is a very knowledgeable and friendly individual who may be able to help you with any research questions about your interest in the AFC too.

    Thumbs up

G'day Danielle & a big warm Aussie welcome to the 'drome on behalf of the Pilots who fly down South in NSW.
As the chaps have said you can source some WW1 Aircraft here in Aus from Xen or from Mighty Ape an on line store here as well.
However Keith who runs this wonderful Forum has the Aerodrome Store with a very big range of models available & has good prices & great service. Postal costs are a bit high from the US but hey if you want it you must have it!

Do you know what Squadron your Great Grandfather was in ?

As you will see from my Signature messages I am a Member of the Australian Society of WW1 Aero Historians & there is a very good website for WW1 History called "the Aerodrome" not to be confused with our WoG Aerodrome. You might like to browse Google & pay it a visit.

I would also like to recommend you hunt down a copy of Aussie Author Michael Molkentin's wonderful history of the Australian Flying Corps in WW1 titled "Fire in the Sky"
Heaps of photos & an in depth history of all 4 Squadrons.

My eldest daughter lives in Newport inland from Morton Bay so maybe one Christmas when I am up there we could meet up.
I know there is a Games Club that meets in Brisbane & they do play Wings of War/Glory.

Once you get comfortable with the site here you might like to send me a personal message with your phone number & we can have a chat about the game & the AFC.

Oh dont forget to pick an Avatar from the range available.
You can access this via your profile page.

    Welcome and G'day Danielle!

Canberra's a fair distance from you, but maybe we'll see you down here some time anyway. I could give you a tour of the Australian War Memorial, which has many exhibits about the AFC.
I'm also a member, so may be able to wangle a private visit to the Treloar Annex, which contains many items not yet ready for public exhibition, being restored etc.

We're lucky that some of the best colour pictures of WWI aircraft in existence were taken in Palestine, of AFC aircraft,

There's a Wings of Glory model of that particular aircraft too.

Welcome Danielle, from cloudy (today) Brisbane.

I used to play semi-regularly with a group at Annerley, but haven't in a long time. I think B.I.G may have a number of players though. If you're keen for a game let me know and we can arrange something to get you familiarised with the basics. I'm eagerly awaiting my shipment of Giants from the recent kickstarter, and was going to try to put together a game for the GoPlay mini con if it's on this March. Paul from the Emperor's Legions has a number of planes from WW1 and WW2 if you're looking for a local retailer.

    Cheers,
    Dan

Hi everyone and thank you so much for the warm welcome

Update is rules and accessories pack not far away by now and there is an event in Annerley in early April. That one is in my diary.

Next stop: I'm going to try and make a gaming mat this weekend having seen a couple of DIY ideas. Thanks Barn for starting the Gaming Mat Availability thread.

    Hi Danielle,

Let me add a belated welcome from another Brisbane based gamer. As Dan (Slexslaw) indicated the Wings of Glory scene up here is a bit stagnant at the moment, nothing like the heady days of 2010 when he had tables of a dozen aircraft every month at B.I.G, Fastbreak Sports and other venues, so it is great to see another local recruit to the game.

Regarding miniatures available in Brisbane last time I looked Fastbreak Sports 1 Chapel Street Nundah had a few WGF miniatures left - a couple of USAS DH4's and a Breguet Br.17.

    Cheers,

    Carl.
