    Question Gaming Mat Availability.

    Hello to all,

I previously started to help a friend Report For Duty yesterday so I may as well put it to use on their behalf. As they commence playing WGF they are fine for a RAP which is coming from me and for from AA or a few Members who have been recommended as Sellers / Stockists.

Gaming mats are not so easy to come by and it is likely that one - possibly two of the Official mats will soon be required. Doesn't matter which of the three Ares Games reprinted last year. What I am trying to avoid is excessive and stupid pricing with this person just starting out into the game.

Any ideas please and MANY thanks in advance for all assistance received

If this was for me then BIG because I never thought I would be needing gaming mats. So there are three Official or Ares Games mats for me to be on the look out for?

The more help with this the better - this must be what you call aiding and abetting new players!

Today I am going to make a kitchen table gaming mat out of paper and sticky tape. Then I will draw some features on it so when the RAP - the rules and everything arrives I can at least get going with what I have got

Best way to go would be this I think. I am not doing it because I already have mats but if not I would.

No harm in making a paper one - look how I started out a year ago when playing WGS at home for the first time. The kitchen table is a good start location to select. I still have my paper mat although it is now decommissioned up in the attic. You will have to excuse the kangaroo or two that you may notice drawn all over the mat!

You can also find interesting patterns of cloth at a fabric shop that are inexpensive. I have one in green, another in brown and a nice water look one that I use for all sorts of miniature gaming.

ATACS woodland is good stuff... and I've got a "Badlands" print that is solid for North Africa. JoAnn's fabrics in the US is a great place to shop... picked up a great blue vinyl for over-water battles.

Works wonders though - this mess was where I kept my custom gaming mats x 2 and the small pink hoover removed the lot in about two minutes

So I am beginning to realise! But a couple of Sellers and suggestions have appeared in my welcome thread.

That pink desktop hoover is CUTE! Did you choose pink or was it chosen for you

The best way to outsource mats is to download a hi res mat file and print it on vinyl in a print shop. Did it many times, works fine.
Lots of files for WGF/WGS are available in the files section. Forumers will also be of help here.

Andy having seen your mats / maps of London in another (WGF) thread just recently IMHO this advice comes from a true Gaming Mat Guru

Vinyl is a good playing surface and quite hard-wearing too - On Galactic Models Gaming Nights when they used to run on Wednesdays the X-Wing Clan all used vinyl gaming mats. Whether they were official or not I don't know but they all used them and swore by them as well

BTW - to understand the video further these are my two DIY custom gaming mats ... The only down sides of which have to be the requirement to weight the corners down after they have been rolled up and the mess factor ...

    Thanks Barney.
A green mat like yours is a universal solution and with added cards/targets/terrain it may be easily modified.
Let me advise you on the corners. There are little metal clips for table cloths available in Home/Garden stores that would solve your problem. I use 4 of them for vinyl mats and they are great.

I know ... This is just so bad that I am pleased to admit that I wasn't the only driving force behind this stunt!
