Thread: French Dewoitine D.520 Conversion to German!

Default French Dewoitine D.520 Conversion to German!

You read it! I fell into the mystery of the D.520 and the large numbers the Luftwaffe absorbed in the invasion of France. They must have had some value or the Germans would not have used them, so I am thinking . . . $5 each at miniature market clearance page . . .

A bit of paint and some crosses . . . to the WEB elves!

And the WEB has a few things to add, the Germans absorbed over 300 of the D.520's! Does anyone know what they designated them as? Or did it remain the D.520? Some cool colors online . . .

I will watch this with interest David as I have that one Dewoitine to do something with. (Convert to a German one )

    Only a couple ?

Only a couple for repaint as Germans!

    4 others to remain French.

    3 Italians to remain Italian.

Some one knows more about this than I do, it appears that when the Germans took over an enemy aircraft for legitimate use, not clandestine, they painted significant areas yellow and added bold German crosses. . . . is this correct? There are several such colors on the web and will be my guides : )

It appears the Germans only ever used them as trainers -- the spitwad MGs (0.295-cal) were too weak for front-line use. The flight schools at Villacoublay and Pau had them; early markings appear to be French camo with roundels overpainted, while late markings appear to be German-standard camo.

Most of the rest went to Italy (as depicted in the minis) or Bulgaria (in German colors).

I think this is true because I have seen a few photos and models now of captured German Lavodchin La-7 and Supermarine Spitfire Mk Vb / one Hawker Hurricane Mk IIc painted this way. At one point there was a captured Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress in operation with Kg.44 which received a yellow tail with the rest of it's livery being dark green.

What one must not forget is that in French service the Dewoitine D.520c carried two designs on their tail-sections which involved either all-over yellow or the red / yellow Vichy Government colour scheme: We have an example of a Vichy painted aircraft in the game.

So my first one is just a cool repaint, called the Zebra on the web, anyone know the story?

    Fast and flashy!

    Then we get serious,

I think they look the part!

For $20 US off the discount/closeout section, it was well spent!

    They look good.

2/3 down the page I found your design!

This site is incredibly detailed about the history of the D.520. On page 4 it talks about the Fleet Air Arm as well as useage by the Germans and others.

Oh, yes, these birds are easily convertible for both sides.
I had a great time redecalling them.
Those ones were pretty "what if" accurate; I mean they might have been used like that by our AF in France.

It is an underestimated plane that could be used in several campaigns on both sides. Well done, David!

    Those all look really good.

One can imagine they are taken from a 1970's movie where they were short of 109s

And then the Dewoitines start looking tasty... Lekker!
And with the correct deck they would be gold.

Looking at this thread with interest now that my two D.520s are entering works.

Looking to paint them up as German as I have the 1/200 scale decals required and Nexus have already produced the Italian version (Stella) ...

The yellow underside looks very interesting - anybody know what the significance for this is please?

I now have 7 of these to play with, 4 of which will stay Italian. I now have some ideas for the other 3. Great site and nice repaints David.
