    Curse You, Red Baron!

System: Wings of Glory First World War

1914-1918… The Great War. World War One. The War to End All Wars It was the war that gave us names such as Gallipoli, The Somme, Verdun, Paschendaele, Ypres. It was the war that first saw the widescale use of machine guns, radios, tanks and aircraft. It was a time when airmen fought against each other, both in single combat, and in wild melees involving dozens of opponents – “Dogfights”. It was the time of the infamous “Red Baron”, Freiherr Manfred Von Rochthofen, and his scarlet painted Fokker Dr.I Triplane. Opposing him were equally famous planes – the Sopwith Camel, the Bristol Fighter, the Spad XIII and SE5a. “Curse you, Red Baron!” is a game where players take on the role of pilots of these aircraft, flying against each other in the skies over Europe at the climax of the war, 1918, Missions involve clearing the sky of the enemy, intercepting giant multi-engine aircraft, spying on enemy troop movements, rescuing friendly pilots downed behind enemy lines, even attempting to shoot down enemy observation balloons using incendiary bullets or rockets. The game uses the award-winning “Wings of Glory”

System. The single page of rules (including illustrations of examples) takes 5 minutes to learn. It is a game suitable for the whole family, yet manages to capture the essence of aerial combat during this period.

This game will run on: Saturday, Sunday

I have just put in a request for leave for the middle two weeks of July, if approved (big IF) I may be able to get down there for Wintercon this year.

I will leave the WGS at home and focus on WGF this year, mainly because the collection is almost too big to fit in the car if I have other passengers

Hope that comes off Carl as Halvo & myself will be there & Gary (Baxter) from South Australia is coming & bringing a mate!

Just had my leave request approved today so that is one hurdle out of the way.

It will be great to catch up.

    Hi Zoe,

Is there a link to your rules for Wintercon? I would like to read them before I get there. I was also wondering if any new rules were added to cater for the Staaken and HP. Thank you for all your work in organising everything

Pretty much the rules as written, except for altitude. To get delay in bombing, number of cards before impact = Sqrt of altitude in pegs. Each peg represents 20m vertically. So an HP400 with a loaded ceiling of about 6000 ft or 90 pegs will drop 9 cards before the target at most, usually less if you want any accuracy.

Wintercon is a go for me this year. I am driving down leaving the Wednesday so I should be in Canberra Thursday afternoon or Friday morning depending on which way I go and where I stop in between.

Looking forward to catching up with the ACT/NSW/SA crew

    Update on the mats -
Estimated Delivery: Wednesday, June 29, 2016 By End of Day

So they will be there, touch wood. I can't sell them on-site, but will have them available for pickup in my car outside. Along with Staakens, O/400s, RAPs etc.

A question - would players prefer a 1915 Q2 or 1915 Q3 scenario as the starter? In Q2 the Vickers Gunbus is a shark amongst a school of tuna. This will require me to refine the rules on using pistols, rifles and carbines, which would be the standard for most other aircraft.

In Q3 we get the start of the Fokker Scourge, and the beginning of 2 seaters with rear machine guns. Most planes will still be targets, but no more Taubes or Bleriots. Still more rifles than mgs though.

I'd then move on to 16 Q 2. The Gunbus will now be outclassed, though still effective vs Albatros B.Is and the like.

By that time, we can then discuss what next to have - Eastern Front Bombers?

Perhaps a continuous game - start with 1915 Q2, then replacements from Q3, then Q4 etc.

  20. #20

    Smile

    Hi Zoe!
I think start at Q3 as that will give more options for aircraft & the Gunbus can still be around.
Move on from there with later aircraft joining in.

    The mats arrived today.

And the DHL courier left with a Rules and Accessories pack, 4 planes, and a packet of 4 paper mats. He's a gamer, and when he saw what I had in stock, he threw money at me.

Hi Barry, I am booked in for Friday night to Sunday night at the Ibis in Watson, good rates and only 3 minutes drive from EPIC. I am not exactly sure what day I am leaving Brisbane, if I can get away on Wednesday it will be a leisurely trip down otherwise I will leave on Thursday.

I have started a thread in the Sales section of the forum regarding all Wings minis left for sale at Emperor's Legions in Annerley Brisbane. It's in the moderator cue at the moment.

Have a look when it pops up and if anyone wants anything I can bring the stuff down to Wintercon.

Chinese restaurant but they do standard Australian cuisine as well as far I recall.

I was considering buying one of the Moranes to repaint as the aircraft flown by the Russian ace Smirnov:

Good prices. I will be bringing my 3 Moraines with me

We are staying at the Mercure hotel which is on Ainslie near the AWM. Roberts wife paid for him to go I am not sure how interested he is in our game but he has always wanted to visit the AWM. We fly in on Friday morning and have a car organised. Should be a great weekend.

Just to clarify Zoe there are no plans to run any WGS at Wintercon? If that is the case I will save myself the time and not bother to bring the seven boxes of WW2 aircraft and accoutrements.

As I understand it Carl, we only have 1 Table so will be WW1 all weekend.
However Zoe will no doubt confirm that.

Sorry - I can't run 2 games as I'd like to. To have WGS as well as WGF would take some advanced planning. Now when Cancon 2017 approaches, if anyone would like to volunteer to run one then (hint hint)... maybe some B-29s and escorts vs various Japanese fighters... or a bomber box or 3 of B17s and B24s vs assorted Luftwaffe types...

One person running both WGF and WGS at an event like Wintercon would be too much, I was just checking there were no other tables.

I would love to come down and run WGS again at Cancon, particularly with the Battle of Britain starter coming out in October this year.

We could start with a Phoney War 'training' mission, move on to a couple of Battle of France missions (incl French v Italians), an anti-shipping Channel attack, a full blown raid on an RAF airfield, then a daylight raid on London.

I will have to see what I can arrange.

This time around I will leave the WGS gear at home.

I ended up driving the 15 hours straight to Canberra yesterday down the coast road. I have not travelled that way south for 20 years and now I remember why - good in parts but the constant roadworks drove me nuts!!

It is a lovely clear winter's day here, looking forward to some sight-seeing and shopping. If you need any help with prep or set up Zoe let me know. Also I brought down those minis for sale, if any Canberra locals would like to pick some up PM me and I can drop them to you directly.

Thanks, Carl. We got most of the gear there at 1700, but things have been a bit hectic. I'll be up early to get the rest, easels etc unless thngs go awry. Parking is an issue - the main parking area is closed off, so I recommend an early start.
