Thread: Homemade Vinyl Game Mats

  1. #1

    Default Homemade Vinyl Game Mats

I recently began collecting WOGF planes. I was looking at the available game mats.
A bit disappointed at the cost, I made a few of my own.
I stitched together some satellite images of the French countryside, "oilifying" the images to make them a bit less realistic, and had them printed on 13mm vinyl sheets.
I was pleased with the results. I used a popular printing website, which frequently runs promotions, to get them at a fair price.

    I made a 4' x 6' that has an overcast effect and a pair of 2.5' x 6' that combined make a 5' x 6' mat.
Below are some low resolution images (the actual images are 75 dpi).

The 2.5' x 6' cost to print is about $45 + $10 shipping (for up to about three items) full price, but with promotions I've seen that as low as $15 to $20.
The 4' by 6' cost $60 but with half-off has gotten down to $30.

A much better deal than $30-$35 for a 2’3” x 3’3” official play mat (although those do look good).

I have an extra 2.5' x 6' east countryside map that I am willing to part with. I don't plan on getting in the business of making mats, but would consider making some or helping out folks who are interested.

(This is my first new post, so hopefully I am doing this right.)

Nice. I saw the old mats for sale on Ebay the other day for $137 each so always good to see some money saving initiative.

Those mats look great! How is the playability? Meaning - how slick is the surface in the context of accidentally moving the minis around and card slippage.

Do you mind sharing the name or website of the company that printed them?

I used Vistaprint to produce the banners.
The vinyl is textured and the printing is matte/semi-gloss (not glossy) so it is not too slick. (See photo below of vinyl from vendor website.)
Traction is better than a smooth table but not as much friction as say a woven fabric.
Their website was easy to upload the files and the frequent promotional prices seem to make it at least as cheap as others that I found.
The site gives specifics on the recommended size of the files. Other sites seemed to accept higher resolution image, but the 75 dpi seems just fine.
I am on a different computer at the moment, but I believe my full map files are about 30MB .png files.

    Hi Redtop,
    I really like your mats!
I would really be interested in the files if you made them available.
    Very nice work, indeed.

Yes, really eye-catching mats. They'll really set your games off visually.

Below are some pictures of the mats as printed out on my floor to give you a better idea of the size and look.

I put the pair of 2.5' x 6' mats together to show how they fit to make a 5' x 6' mat.
I've also included a few close-ups so you can get an idea of the resolution and look of the image.

For anyone buying the Giants of the Sky or wanting a long bombing run mat, I have also created a file to make a 2.5' x 12' mat, with the idea that it can be scrolled.
Below is a very low resolution image.

If anyone is interested in the full sized files, you can PM me and I will send you a link.
I'm sharing for the good of the community, so I only ask that you do not resell them for a profit.

I recommend that, if you do use Vistaprint to print them out, wait until there is a promotion of at least 25% off that applies.
There happens to be a 50% off banner sale that ends tonight (2-19-19) if you use the code SIGN50.

The map looks better in a simple wood frame (yet to be stained) with a hardboard backing.

Brilliant mats for sure! I would love to get a set one of these days, Zeppelins really eat up a mat fast and if you run a mission with 3 of them . . . well the scrolling idea might be a necessity! Has any one ventured into winter with a snow covered mat yet? That would be "cool" indeed as well . . . just thinking of my northern visits and friends!

I have made a new version of my 2.5' x 12' mat adding the overcast effect which folks seem like on the 4' x 6' countryside mat.
Below is a low resolution version of the full sized file.

    Attachment 189653

(Note: The version of that mat which I had printed and posted pictures of in the "Giants Play Area Size" thread is the earlier version without the overcast effect.)

In response to suggestions, I have made a new map of overcast English Coastline in two sizes, 4' x 8' and 4' x 6'.
Good perhaps for WWI Zeppelin Staaken R.VI approach toward London or WWII Battle of Britain.

In response to a request, I have made overcast versions of the pair of 2.5' x 6' East and West French Countryside maps.
When I first made them, I was enchanted by the vibrant colors of the clear-sky versions. I have since realized from comments that most folks prefer the overcast versions because they keep better contrast with the planes.
Below are the low res previews of the new files. (The files are the full bleed dimensions. So, just like the clear-sky versions, the map edges should line up well after they are trimmed by the printer.)

With those two, the current list of my map files includes:
    1. 4' x 6' French Countryside - Overcast
    2. 2.5' x 6' French Countryside West - Overcast
    3. 2.5' x 6' French Countryside East - Overcast
    4. 2.5' x 6' French Countryside West - Clear-Sky
    5. 2.5' x 6' French Countryside East - Clear-Sky
    6. 2.5' x 12' French Countryside (Beaumont) Scroller - Overcast
    7. 2.5' x 12' French Countryside (Beaumont) Scroller - Clear-Sky
    8. 4' x 6' English Coastline - Overcast
    9. 4' x 8' English Coastline - Overcast

PM me if you want any of the files.

A bit off topic, but I thought I would share a couple of pictures of the Overcast French Countryside Mat in my improved game table.

I gave the frame a mediocre stain job and made a couple of movable console holders that hang on the side of the table rails.
The holders are at a fixed 45 degree angle, so the plan is to make some custom consoles with recessed card and token slots.
Each holder will fit four of the consoles.
I have one work-in-progress console (which took way too long to make), pictured empty and with tokens and cards.

Yes that console looks fantastic, would definitely give people reason to use them. The ones supplied with the game most of my friends just ignore them and use the table. This contraption takes up no space and leaves the whole space for the aircraft.

    Default Beware of Vistaprint!!

This really is great work and I'm interested in getting some printed locally by a sign maker. However, I will not use Vistaprint ever again!! I ordered some business cards from them a while ago, then a few months later found unauthorized transactions coming out of my bank - I discovered that Vistaprint had sold my personal information, including credit card details, to third party companies. It took a lot of work and hassle to get things put right. YMMV, but caveat emptor!

Disappointing to hear about Albert's experience with Vistaprint. But the warning is appreciated and I'm all for supporting local businesses. Like Bruce, my personal experience with Vistaprint has been good so far. I've used them on several occasions over the last couple of years without problems, including issues with disclosure of my information.

To be fair, it happened to me a few years ago, so maybe they had enough complaints and got their act together. Hope you all continue to receive good and problem free service from them.

Are you sure it was actually sold and not hacked? Not trying to defend Vistaprint - just making sure I understand. It just seems strange that a company would sell CC info.
