Thread: Getting into WGS

    Default Getting into WGS

    Greetings,

yesterday some friends and me decided to get into WGS. The simplest way is to buy either a Starter Pack or the RAP and some planes, I recon. But somewhere here on the board I read something about new "Campaign Packs" depicting the Battle over Britain and/or Midway being on the horizon. Is that correct? Will these Packs include new plane models? When will they be available? Is it better to wait or to start right now with the stuff that is already available?

Yes, something is on the horizon, unfortunately we are heading there at a snails pace at the moment. It's best to get the Starter Pack and pick up some extra planes because we aren't even sure of the release date of Series 6 (which is supposed to be coming out before the Campaign Packs). We do know they will be out soon but not exactly when.

    "Soon" sounds good to me.

That's series 6 being out soon (The Judy, SBD, P-47, and my personal crush, the Bf-109K). The campaign packs haven't even been officially announced.

Oh, I see. Then I'll wait for Series 6 first (especially the Judy).

    Meine Empfehlung:

Rules & Acessoire Pack + 2 Gloster Gladiators and 2 Fiat Falcos for training and getting familiar with WGS.

Then 2 pieces each of P51, FW190D, KI84 & Spitfire IX to have a good base to combine with the upcoming late war planes. (series 6 + 7)

To add some fun: Buy one of the 4-engines heavies - a B17 for all theaters or a Lancaster for Europe.

Don't wait for BoB or Pacific starter sets.
    Voilà le soleil d'Austerlitz!

Dennis, good man for joining the WGS clan ... You will not regret your decision.

http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/sho...uits-and-Bumps is a thread inspired by a brand new WGS player starting out with their first Gloster Gladiator Mk 1s (see Sven's posting above) and learning the game all the way through to becoming a successful Dambuster pilot. The main bulk of this thread has been written by a flight instructor but many contributions ensure that it never gets boring. There's even tips about what to do if like me you are on a budget and need to fill time between buying opportunities.

I've been playing WGS solidly for a year now and so anything you need please just ask. It's a very different game from WGF but the one thing it is NOT is WGF's smaller and less capable sibling. May I wish you the very best of luck at the start of your WGS Playing Career

I too think that the best way for you to start at the moment is to buy a Rules and Accessories Pack and to shop around for two or four planes, which may have fought against each other, Dennis.

    What that man said.

With no confirmed news about new starter sets, you might as well get on with it now, get plenty of game time in, and then decide yes-or-no when, and if, the new starter sets appear.

It may be possible for you to buy a WW2 Rules and 4 Plane Combo Pack like the one shown on this weblink https://www.gameslore.com/acatalog/P...ombo_Pack.html

Thank you guys for the kind words. Since I'm only interested in the Pacific Theater (the European Theater is reserved for my WGF games ), I won't be buying Combo Packs, but specifically planes which operated in the Pacific War. There are not as many to date, which is quite good for an entry point of view.

As your Playing Career progresses you may want to start looking at the Wings of War from the Pacific Theater too. Manufactured by Nexus Games they do still come up for sale on E-Bay or on there in Auctions. At the same time place a WANTED Ad in the Classifieds Section of the Aerodrome to see if anybody has any of these which they would be prepared to part with or sell as they have been out of print for some time now.

You find Mitsubishi A6M2 Reisens (Zeroes) along with Aichi D-1 Val dive bombers (this is a difficult art to perfect) as well as the Grumman F4F Wildcat in the Wings of War range. Wings of Glory (Ares Games) offers the North American P-51D Mustang as well as the Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien and Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate. Oh - Not to forget the Doolittle Edition of the North American B-25B Mitchell which comes under Medium Bombers. Collecting all of these should be enough to get you off to an excellent start.

In the up and coming WGS Series 6 come more Pacific Theater aircraft such as the Douglas SBD Dauntless and the Judy.

Yes, I'm pretty much excited about the Dauntless and the Judy. They just look fantastic.

Tonx forgot to mention another model, the Curtiss P-40. These planes were used in China and in the Pacific against the Japanese.

Hawker Hurricanes and Supermarine Spitfires served in the PTO & CBI. Though Hurricanes proved less successful, Mk.IIBs operated out of bases in Burma, Ceylon, Singapore, and the Netherlands East Indies. Though it lacks the "trop" filter many were fitted with, Nexus' Hawker Hurricane (especially the "ugly" Soviet version) can still be had for a decent price.

The RAAF operated the Spitfire Mk.VC (trop) in 1942-1943, which is a dead-ringer for Ares' Spitfire Mk.IX (minus the trop filter, of course), though the maneuver deck would need to be replaced. It's been suggested on these boards that either an "F" deck (Lord_Ninja) or an "A" deck (Jager) would be appropriate for a Mk.V Spitfire. For what it's worth, the Mk.VIIIs operated by the RAAF later in the war could easily be represented by the Mk.IX models we have... especially at this scale.

I'm not so fond of buying "old" Nexus minis (personally, I think the Ares minis look superior, and I'm afraid of errata'd stats and/or maneuver decks), so I'll stick to Ares' offering for the time being. Btw, is there any chance we'll see a Lockheed P-38 Lightning in the near future?

    One other question:

I want to order the North American P-51D Mustang (Saks) model (as an adversary to the Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate); does it have the famous "Enchantress" paintjob? Can't really tell on the photos on the Ares page.

Once you get established try AIM and Shapeways for those other Pacific planes you want/need. Bases can be bought from AA and there is a way around decks.

    I'm flying:
    Zeros
    Vals
    Kates
    Annes
    Sallys
    Petes
    Rufes
    Emily
    Mavis
    Nates
    Claude
    SB2S
    Gladiators
    P40
    P36
    P38
    Hurricanes
    B17
    Blenheims
    Wildcat
    Devastators
    SBDS
    P15s
    CR32s

    And a lot more.

    Join the madness.
See you on the Dark Side......

    I have all Ki84 planes.

    What do you mean with:

    famous "Enchantress" paintjob?

The "Franks" look exactly like displayed on the Are Games website.

...and much better if you have them in hands.

I mean the P-51D Mustang (Saks), which is described inbthe Preview Article to have "The Enhantress"/a Pin-up Girl on one side of the fuselage. Does the miniature also have this paintjob?

    Ah...

    You mean the lady.

It's on the fuselage and looks great. (...burnt my fingers the first time I touched the miniature)

...and I can recommend the silver/green "Frank" (52th Sentai). That one is really nice.

Played my first WGS games today, and I have to admit, WGF is still my favorite, but it was a blast. WGS is so fast, the standard Game Mats aren't big enough. Very tense gameplay. Here are some impressions:

Dennis I am glad you have played your first games of WGS. However I noticed that you are using late-war fighters with the bigger size manoeuver cards on just one official gaming mat. This will account for why you feel your gaming environment wasn't big enough. If you try using aircraft which use the standard size manoeuver cards you may find that you will be able to use one mat more productively and successfully.

Starting out the Wife and I had a 90 cm x 90 cm gaming environment for which I made my own custom gaming mat. This fitted on the kitchen table perfectly and accommodated the Gloster Gladiators and Reggiane Re.2001 Falco IIs which we started playing with. As we advanced into the later-war types of aircraft 90 cm x 90 cm soon became like flying around a goldfish bowl! We bought two official gaming mats to overcome this problem and had to start playing in our dining room instead.

The smallest space I have ever played Wings of Glory in was 40 cm x 55 cm - but I was using a Hawker Hurricane Mk I vs Mitsubishi A6M2 Reisen from the Wings of War range of - both use standard size manoeuver cards. The story behind this is a joke about the fold-down tables which are in the cockpit of an Airbus A380 for pilots to use measure 40 cm x 55 cm ... Let us see if a game would fit onto one of these table tops!

WGF and WGS have different qualities and require different skills when looked at closely. I'd say now that I am a WGF player too that one doesn't stand out above the other so far. By the way congratulations to whoever was playing the Spitfire Mk IX ... Drawing a Boom Card in your first WGS Session is definitely a case of things can only get better!

I put two mats together when flying planes that use the full sized cards. I have the one you are using and then add the City map or the Sails of Glory version if I want to battle over the open seas.

It looks gorgeous (thank you, Lorenzo!) and with 140 cm x 90 cm it fits on my kitchen table. Let's hope the end result is as beautiful as the source material.

That's my favourite WWII Pacific mat.

Played a lot of solo games on this one.

    Those Spitfires are real beauties!

    I love them.

Yes, nice girls, good wine and a large Pacific mat may provide a truly cinematic experience.
