Have these ever been considered? I tried making my own and the result was disastrous.

Not as a standard product as I don't think many people are playing in that scale. I could do them as custom orders for you though. I think you would want to step up from 1/8 to 1/4 in thickness. This would better handle the extra leverage placed on the bases by larger planes. It would also add more weight down low. What would you use for the "pegs"?
Plastruct acrylic rods. They come in a variety of thicknesses and are pretty inexpensive. No need for individual pegs; they're cheap enough to make one-piece stands for different altitudes.
If these stands would be of any use to 1/72 scale gaming I have fifteen of them. They are looking for a good home. PM me if these could be useful.
I have 1/8" and 1/4" rods. I think 1/8 is too flimsy and 1/4 too beefy, so perhaps 3/16?
I did a 200% on the cards, doubling the dimensions to 88 x 136 mm. The wingspan of a 1/72 SPAD is about 110 mm, so the base-to-model ratio seems right.
Did you ever run a game using these? Love to see pictures.
