Tough to vote on such fine work. Congratulations to everyone.
Same here though one entry for me stood out a mile: I voted it of course but I also reckon that in terms of playing for fun this character has as much of a place in the game as Snoopy does - well characters considering there's a sidekick often involved too!
Fantastic work everyone - loads of creativity and an exceptional opportunity for FNPs and newcomers to compare the various manufacturers side-by-side. So hard to decide but I'm going to stay schtum about which other two I voted for ...
Many thanks to one entrant for the compliment! My own entry has yet to get a vote BTW.
Critic mode on:
All re-paintings in the contest look really nice, and I would love having them in my collection -- actually, now I want a couple of them and will re-paint some Fokker D.VII
Now, I'm still wondering about how to be fair when voting (although I've voted already). I've built and painted plastic models (although not Valom), painted shapeways 3D Printed models, and re-painted Ares&Neux offical WoG/W minis, as I'm guessing many others here had. And I have to say all those are very diferent species to deal with -- from painting surfaces textures to decals quality. There is a very diferent level of dificulty on building and painting each. Next time I vote for a contest like thise one I will take that in consideration.
VERY NICE WORK ALL MY VOTES ARE IN.
Is this a record turn out for a painting comp? " Some wonderful men painted those flying machines.

Coming down is the hardest thing
I think we have to tread carefully when on the subject of decals chaps.
Some repaints can be done with the Ares decals left in place and maybe just added to.
Some decals, like mine are mostly home made and often printed from an Osprey book, reduced, visited by photo shop and then applied, but may have the Oberst's or Dom's roundels or letters added.
Other people may buy in decals, but even then, overall decaling can be an intricate and difficult task in its own right if a large area and matching of joins have to be done.
If we start to distinguish between these aspects of the model, do we then not need to look at the complexity of the model itself, and judge the degree of difficulty in assembly. So is a Valom more challenging than a Reverisco, than a Red Eagle, than a Shapeway, than an Ares.
Let us not forget what this challenge is really all about. These competitions are meant to be a fun way to help get a member to Origins, not a cut throat attempt to score top marks over your fellow members.
The day we start nit picking about entry levels is the day I will be saying sayonara to that for a game of soldiers. I had enough of that sort of thing grading practical examination work for forty odd years.
When all is said and done, it is going to come down to a bunch of we chaps just doing our best to give a vote for the plane we like best.

I wholeheartedly agree with the gentleman Rob, and what he said just above.
This is about celebrating the best of our work and pleasure, so let's do it that way.
Hear, hear Rob old chap - for me it was about taking part and as I had a D.VII in need of a repaint I was able to contribute to this comp.
I selected a scheme that caught my eye and I'd like on my wargame table, simple as that. I have no expectation of winning anything other than being part of the biggest comp so far & getting a nice looking personal kite to fly.
So pick your faves and vote for three of them !

I personally do take the decals into account when selecting my pics. However, it's only when decals are applied badly (which is pretty much never) to they lose points in my system. If they are well done and I can tell that they were hard to apply due to the shape, size or location, they can add points as well.
My main motivation behind doing these comps is to motivate all you guys and gals out there to do that repaint you have been thinking about or to give it a try for first timers. It's also a great tool to generate more interest in the game and produce good content for the site.
If you don't win, you still have a newly painted plane that you did that you can fly with pride. It's one of things where everyone truly is a winner!
Lozenge decals, one of my favourite pass times. I looked at the wing ends to see how well these were done as this is the most tricky part to get the decals looking good. The Valom wings are thin making the decals much easier to apply well, while a shapeways and Ares wing is much thicker making a smooth finish to the edges more difficult (and often needs touching up with paint). I judged by what caught my eye and where the decals (if applied) looked perfect. This meant I didn't vote for my own entry as I knew the faults with it. The quality and volume of the entries is fantastic. I really enjoyed making my entry and will enjoy flying it, this was the aim for me. Great work everyone! Let's hope that the next competition is just as popular.

Funny you should say that Dave. I had three Gorings bought when the reissue came out. They were earmarked to complete one of my Jastas and have been languishing in the boxes ever since. This comp not only motivated me to complete them but to buy two more to really finish off the lot. The only decision I had to make was which one to enter in the end. So no thoughts of getting the most outstanding colour scheme to win, just another job of many now put to bed.

Ok, I've got a number one, and 26 joint seconds so far..... ok one for fun....... and eeny meeny miney mo....
Well said, Rob. One again you prove yourself a class act.
I did not enter, and am not invested in any particular entry, but I'm very pleased with the number of entries! It reflects positively the commitment many here have to building and maintaining the community.
Thank you to all who took the time to complete an entry!
This fine contest truly deserves BGG attention, IMHO.

Dastardly gets extra credit just for the concept.
You are the man, Andy!
This pretty much sums up my feelings.
Well said, Rob
I still have two spare Goerings that I will hopefully tackle at some point.
I thought I might get a chance to try this contest but ended up short of time, even with the advance notice provided for this contest.
If I mess it up I have a good friend who will fix it up nicely for me.
On;y one entry hasn't garmered any votes. The rest are all good.
In my opinion: By investing so much money, time and love*, 1 of the 3 votes should be reserved for your own plane.
But this might be depend on each ones attitude.
*what I can confirm for all the entries here!
(I saw once an original Ares Fokker.EIII in a contest with only a stripe on the fuselage...)

I did, my friend.

That's how I try to live my life. Not always easy.

Nope couldnt vote for mine especially after seeing the best of the rest.

I voted for the three that I thought were the best. I always do that. Sometimes - not often - that includes my own entry. I encourage others to take the same attitude. Technical quality can be judged objectively, but there are subjective factors as well, choice of subject, imagination, and opinions on these can differ. The thing is, I think everyone who entered did so not in a spirit of "winning is everything", though the prizes certainly encouraged everyone to do their best - but purely for the joy of making a model that they could feel proud of and display before their peers.
Every one of them would look good in a game.
I just love seeing others stepping out and trying their hand at customizing and exploring their creativity. That is one of the things I really appreciate about this site and those who belong here! And of course there are those steadfast encouragers (Zoe and a few others) who help us step up to the challenges! Thanks all!
Just one more day to go folks, so those who have not voted now is the time to do it.

I don't think my entry is at all one of the best three.
But even if it was, I wouldn't vote on it.
But I can understand that someone would find his/her entry one of the best and honestly vote for himself/herself.
