In the movie, as I recall it, Richthoffen is depicted mostly as a flying knight, a romatized-hero, a warrior from a previous and more noble times (embodying chivalrious actitudes) -- kinda Don Quijote on a red-triplane; while Brown is depicted (mostly) as a modern-day, industrial-war warrior -- for example: in one scene he refuses to toast in honor of a German pilot shoot-down that day. The dual characteristic of old-chivalry vs modern-warfare in WW1 air combat is what the director is trying to present in the film, placing the Red Baron a a representative of the former and Brown of the later. That doesn't mean that Brown coudn't have mixed feelings regarding the loosing of those 'chivalrious' times, like he does at the end of the movie -- that is probably the feelings held by the film director

Ezekiel! Thanks for this. I do love a good film discussion!

I fully agree with your assessment. But the film is based on a fictional story.

In reality neither Richthoffen was so much a knight or Brown a modern military man.

Richthoffen used a set of engagement rules when dogfighting that were very good (made him the top scored as an ace) but weren't that chivalrous... And Brown was bound to a new mind set that modernity brought to war. It in fact thorn him inside for the rest of his brief life.

I know and I agree. I was purelly discussing the reprsentation of MvR and Brown in the film

An obscure fact about Brown - He never lost a man in his squadron because he wouldn't let them engage until they went to a training "program" in his squadron.

    Hmm… Uff…I cannot believe… How to say that…
This contest is a big surprise for me. Absolutely unexpected results.
For the first time I tried the painting contest and I hoped for „just a few votes“.
26 votes and the 3rd place is much more!
Many thanks to all those who choose my plane in such an outstanding competition.
And warm congratulations to the winners with 27. It was tight, but well deserved, without doubt.

    Well done Kubajs.
At least I got two out of the top three right, and you were one of them.
My no 21 scored a stunning three.

As FOK, I got two out of three, and Kubajs' plane is one of them. And I scored 2 votes, which, actually, is more than I expected, after seeing all entries.

Congratulations to all winners and to all contesters! It was massive and it was well done!

Thanks Alex. You obviously have good taste!

I wanted to paint my Valom but couldn't find it so I had to do a Shapeways. Not easy to paint the forward fuselage with the wings and struts! Now I can't wait to get it into a game.

That really was an amazing competition, a true classic, and all of the entries were painted to a very respectable standard. The Fokker D.VII has so many possibilities for colourful schemes.
I was so inspired by the idea that, for the first time in my life, I entered a painting comp entry.
It was my first Valom kit and my first use of the lozenge decals. Tricky but untimately rewarding.
So the comp has a positive effect on my modelling. I should have done this long ago.

Congratulations to the worthy winners and equally to the rest of the magnificent field.

Thanks Tim, I just wish I could connect it with a pilot. No 'W' in any of the pilot names I have for J46. I'm guessing the plane was passed on to the Jasta from elsewhere.

You got my vote if you were #1 Peter, #15 got another & Alex's #19 was the other - I was real surprised he was not in the top three or even vying for first all things considered.
Much better than my humble effort which was #22. I think that those listed as fictional pilots don't attract the votes anyway, though mine was a misnomer as it was a fictional paint job (as far as I know) on a real Fokker D.VII !
8417 now hangs in the RAF museum at Hendon apparently in its correct lozenge finish but in the sixties it looked like this !

It was a marvellous opportunity for me to repaint and get a historically accurate 15th squadron DVII for my 1920 collection. Knowing it is not perfect, I was happy and proud to show you chaps one of the planes our Air Force got and used against bolshevicks and their invasion we repelled together with the American volunteers. Moreover, those planes were smuggled to Poland in 1920 by Chancellor Bismarck's relative. Well, money talks!

Sorry this took so long, but I was out of town for two days. Besides that, the camo was a challenge.

It is in a four-color pattern, with five colors! Also, it wasn't done in a continuous pattern across the wing from tip to tip. It was repeating chord-wise, with a slight stagger, and a change in the color pattern! I didn't emulate the color change, as that was going to take much longer. Here is my attempt at the card:
