Thread: Fokker D.VII Challenge -- VOTING!!

  1. #1

Default Fokker D.VII Challenge -- VOTING!!

This is by far our participated in painting contest to date with 27 entries! Everyone should be very proud of the entries they made as they are all good. I hope everyone enjoyed painting the D.VIIs and gets even more enjoyment out of seeing one of their own creations out there flying on the table!

Now comes the hard part for the community, picking just three winners!

Criteria you should look for when voting for your favorite entry:

    • Smooth paint
    • Build quality (if it is a metal or resin kit)
    • Surface prep (if it is a Shapeways model)
    • The Devil is in the details, take time to look for the painted details
    • Unique subject, is it a pilot/plane that you have seen a lot of?

I suggest you note your top picks and come back after a while and view them again before voting.

    Good Luck everyone!

    What he said!

Not fair, Keith. Can we not vote for a few different categories? There are some interesting fictional entries, with one in particular that should be in a class of its own.

A few have photography issues, but not too bad. And No.25's "Morning in Front of the Barn" picture is awesome! Great staging.

These are all done very well. I'm going to look at these over a few days and then put in my vote.

I agree with that, I'll have to take Oberst Hajj's suggestion and come back not only once but a few times. Narrowing it down might turn into a chore.

What a great set of entries!

Picking just three will be Tricky.

I must think on this a while.

    I'll be back.

Well we have a week to decide, and I think I will need all of that.
With so many entries, and all at least "good", it will be very difficult to winnow down to just 3.

Great to see what could become of my "spare" Goerings ...

    Cool

    An exceedingly hard vote.
Question on #24 Oberst. Is that supposed to be yellow as well in the second picture or is that a second plane done in orange. Both look really good.

    OK I'm down to 7.

It's just the lighting in that photo that makes it look more orange then yellow.

I wonder how do you all give your votes. What criteria do you use, I mean.

I basically used three variables to decide mine: 'dificulty' (how hard would be painting a certain scheme; 'cleanness' (how good the painting is or seems to be for what I can see in the pictures); and 'pretty' (self explanatory)

further question: is it there a rule regarding pictures? how should they be taken, I mean. It seems that only 3 pics are allowed, but was it any rules about how pics should have been taken? (like, for example: top, side, 3/4 profilie).

    have a happy voting

Fun fact: the three I've chosen are withing the top-3 voted right now... and one is tied with my 'fourth-best'; so it seems that I'm agreen with the majority so far.

Criteria for this is difficult as there is actual painting and then decals. I look at the sharpness of the painting. Is it clean with sharp detail? For decals, everything should be perfectly aligned. Any mismatch loses points.

Ezekiel, that pretty well sums up what I base my votes off as well. I believe there are supposed to be exceptions to some depending on the make of the model, such as how smooth they are. As I haven't dealt with Shapeways or Valom I basically just treat them all the same. Which may make me a little biased if certain products are really hard to make smooth and have the paint take nicely. This was a really difficult choice narrowing it down. I saved them and did a whole "this guy vs this guy" to narrow it down. Maybe not the best method for the above stated reasons but it seemed the only way to go instead of looking at them all over and over again.

My eyeballs have glazed over. There is so much talent. Congratulations to all you modelers out there. I had to pour over these again and again and narrowing in on very fine details. It was the only way for me to make any choices. For me it comes down to 5 that my scrolling kept coming back to. How I will chose 3 from my group of 5, I have no idea.

Narrowed it down to 10 that made it to a PowerPoint

    Then 7

    Then 5 ....

    Then the final 3.
Those were very difficult to winnow down. I was back and forth among the 5 for some time.
I see several who did not quite make my final are scoring well, so I was not alone.

As I said before - excellent all around.
    Congratulations to all.
I would be more than happy to have any of these fine aircraft in my Jasta

The compulsive side of my brain counts,
    14 Ares, 9 Valom, 4 Shapeways, very interesting . . .

8 Ares models used no lozenge patterns,
9 (All but 1) Valom models had lozenges,
    6 Ares had lozenges,
    4 (Every) Shapeways had lozenges.

    David,

Extensive use of lozenges at Valom models is most probably due to good quality of Valom decals. I would discuss reasons for use of lozenge at Shapeways models after the contest.

Btw, I noticed that No14 (Valom) didn't use lozenge.

Anyway, as all of us noticed, great contest!

I voted. It was very very tough. Kudo's to everyone who put up planes. I think they all look fantastic and would be honored to fly any of them!

Not playing WGF made the rarity issue a non-factor for me. Having voted, it appears that I picked one top 3, 1 mid-pack, and one that was (not quite) just me.
