Thread: The High Price of Victory!

Default The High Price of Victory!

Once again, my wife and I took to the skies in an attempt to put all of the series 4 planes through their paces. Previously, we flew a recon mission where I took a single Rumpler with 2 Pfalz's as escorts while she patrolled the target area with three S.E.5a's. See this link:
    http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/showthread.php?t=2378

Last night Allison wanted to recreate the mission but instead she took up a Breguet BR 14 B2 with two RAF S.E.5a's as escorts while I patrolled the target area with three Pfalz D.III's. Allison started off the mission so focused on getting her Breguet and escorts down to the correct altitude for a good photograph of the target, I thought I was going to have an easy time of splashing her Breguet.

The tide certainly turned against me and by the end of the mission all three of my Pfalz's where in Pflames! On the upside, my persistance did pay off and I was able to bring down her Breguet after it had made a successful photo run. So in the end, I guess you could say I was victorious since the recon photos never made it back, but I lost all three Pfalz D.III's in the process.

For a play by play "video" of the action check out this 37 second stop motion movie of the battle: http://www.youtube.com/user/legacyrkh?feature=mhum

If you notice near the end of the movie, Holtzem's D.III is about to finish off Dallas' S.E.5a, when Bishop slides in and scores a game ending 1 card hit = 5 points of damage , sending Holtzem into the dirt! The video also has sound so turn on your speakers if you have them.

I'll have to watch the movie when I get home.

Seems like the deck was stacked against you. That Breguet can take a ton of damage, and the A deck for the rear arc is tough. The SE5a's can fly circles around my beloved Pfalz, too, although if you use Ditca Boelcke, you should put all three Pfalz on the Breguet - concentrate fire!

    Do you play blindspot rules?

Dave, we did have the blinspot rules in effect and the Breguet she flew was the B/B (French BR 129) so the rear gunner had some disadvantages. It also hurt her Breguet because once we got down to the deck I could really hide in that blindspot well. By concentrating our fire on the Breguet, I was able to knock it down but the two S.E.5a's chewed my Pfalz's up! I also drew some really high cards from the A deck early on.

    The wise sage teaches,

"He who suggests that the wife fly a Breguet 14 against him in a Wings of War mission should prepare to endure much punishment."

Great video, I just watched it with my boys who put me to same by explaining how if Dad gets a web cam they could make films of games and post them on the net. I now accept that being able to use Microsoft Office is not cutting edge in the modern day.

Thanks for posting the video and watch out for James and Dan Productions posting WoW films, coming to a computer near year soon.

    Cheers,

    Aled

I agree with Dave. Seems like you were outmatched from the start. The only thing you had going for you was you matched her in health, but otherwise you were completely outmatched with the SE5a's. The Breguet can easily handle a Pfalz D.III while the SE5a's can totally out maneuver the remaining D.III's. Maybe if you tried it again with only one SE5a instead of two it would be a better contest.

Thanks for the report!! Overall I think you faired quite well considering the circumstances.

Hey Al, the funeral pyres are made from a large pipe cleaner I picked up at a Arts and Crafts store. I use them for both Fire Counters and smoke counters. I had seen them on this site a ways back and decided to copy the idea. After cutting to the size I wanted, I just painted the tips yellow and then blended into red. I take the Flame marker and stick it into the peg hole on the miniature base of the downed aircraft.

I have found that females playing this game (read wifer or girlfriend) are the most deadly thing you can fly against!! They almost ALWAYS cause you to pull the highest or worst damage cards and they draw an inordinate amount of those pesky zero cards!! The females that play in our league are dangerous opponents. Besides they are totally focused on shooting YOU personally down, I don't think they don't see it as Baker vs Voss...It's You vs them!!

Great video! Our group also makes the smoke and fire markers from that kind of pipe cleaners...We use the sharpie markers to color the white ones. It keeps them softer than paint and it is easier to control.

Good luck on your next sortie against your wife!

I will have to give the sharpie idea a go Charlie. I'm not crazy about how stiff the pipe cleaner becomes when it is painted. Thanks for sharing that tip.
