Thread: Fokker D.VII Challenge!

  1. #1

    Default Fokker D.VII Challenge!

Since the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" is just barely behind us, I thought it might be fitting to have a WWI repaint contest. Since the Fokker D.VII was the only aircraft specifically called out in the Armistice of Compiègne, what better better aircraft to highlight with this repaint contest! Besides, we could all use another D.VII in our hangars

Who: Any registered Wings of War Aerodrome member.
    What: Fokker D.VII Painting Contest
    When: 28 November 2015 to 31 January 2016.
    Winner: Chosen by: Community vote

    • Miniature must be a Fokker D.VII

I think I shall pick up the gauntlet, Herr Oberst! Thank you for throwing it down

This looks to be a very interesting contest - as Dom says, if I may paraphrase: We've seen some really pretty DVIIs elsewhere on the site, so we know there is a lot of high-quality competition

But you can never have too many Fokker DVIIs in your hangar...

    All the best,
    Matt

Count me in on this. I already have the WoG Udet and Schafer D.VII minis and have just invested in a Valom Duo 1/144 kit so will have two more to paint up to join them. (If I can only find the time over Christmas!) So the best one of these two newbys will be entered. I hope.

Tempted though I am, I think I shall give this one a miss - too much WGS to paint. Look forward to seeing the entries though.

I have a few D.VIIs reserved for Eastern Front schemes. But those are fairly plain. I can spare one for something more...spectacular.

    Starting the surface prep now.

What are your suggestions, what would be most proper Vallejo paints to paint

    4 colour lozenge upper wing
    4 colour lozenge lower wing

    5 colour lozenge upper wing
    5 colour lozenge lower wing

Surprisingly, I plan to paint Fokker D.VII ( ) and mayby, just maybe, I'll try to paint lozenge freehand...

    Soo...

Buying decals and putting them on the Goering plane is OK?

    Name: reviresco_decals_27828.jpg
Views: 1293

And I can print my own decals on decal paper and put them on a plane, and that is OK?

But printing the plane and building out of paper it isn't OK?

Even if it is in 144th scale? I can use a bit of paint and trim it out. I can paint a Reviresco pilot, and put him in the cockpit. It's got to be tougher to build a paper plane than it is to paint one. Just saying.

Darn. I just answered my own question. It's a "Painting" contest, not a "Building" contest.

Well, I found a colour scheme I like, and might actually be able to paint:

Just completed the first draft of the decals for my D.VII.

My own personal opinion - using commercial decals to 100% skin a model is almost as iffy as entering a pre-painted one. I say "almost" as anyone who's tried a 100% skin will tell you there's a lot of skill involved making it look right. Try using Reviresco decals on anything other than a Reviresco model, and you'll see many tiny differences that will need significant touch-ups.

However, if you design your own decals - just adding crosses and lozenging from commercial sources - especially if you have to paint quite a bit (wing edges, the fiddly bits by the struts etc, increasing colour saturation on decalled surfaces) then that's another matter.

Basically, you need significant IP content.

The Oberst has spoken regarding paper planes. I personally agree with this comment though:
It's got to be tougher to build a paper plane than it is to paint one. Just saying.
To make one that can compete with a metal kit is as tough as making a metal kit that can compete with a Shapeways WSF one. And that is as tough as making a WSF plane that can compete with an Ares one, or making an Ares one that can compete with a Resin fine-scale one from Valom.

That's irrelevant though. The Oberst has spoken, and his view has at least as good a rationale as my own opinion. His view is not manifestly unreasonable, so it should be accepted without question.

As you said Mike, it's not a building contest (and I agree paper is much harder then traditional kit). As for decals, they have always been a part of our contests and of repainting. If we go down this road, where do we stop? If you want to use your computer graphics skills, I say make your decals and use them on a physical mini to blow us all away!

If you do do this, it would be helpful to post the decal sheet for others to use, after the comp. So those "blown away" could make their own model, if they like it.

  49. #49

Well, I might do a decal sheet, but my success with self-produced decals would ruin the effort.

Posting the image so others could use it would be a no-brainer.

I wouldn't win the contest, though.

Hmmm... Maybe it is the bonding agent I'm using? I bought some Testor's decal material and bonding spray from a FLGS a while back, and had no success with printing decals. I wasted an entire sheet colour matching, and when I finally got the colour right, the decals nearly disintegrated and bled when I put them on my models. Later, the decals lifted and peeled off (no, I didn't clear-coat the plane. Bad me).

Any hints to assist with decals? I have new Micro-scale decal material, and I gloss clear-coated the surface before applying this time. However, the colours bled and came off, anyway. Now I will have to Matt clear-coat and touch-up the decals.
