Thread: At Least Cameras Don't Jam - A Photo Run AAR

Default At Least Cameras Don't Jam - A Photo Run AAR

A mate of mine swung by today, and we played a few games, so I've written up some AARs that I'll put up eventually. So the scenario; two American SPAD XIIIs are scrambled to intercept a German Recon aircraft, and its escorts. One of the SPADs isn't fully painted, I hadn't expected my mate to come over.

    Game set up

The two SPADs flew right at the Roland C.II and both opened fire, and then executed a left hand turn to get back on the Roland's six, which turned right to avoid them. The Roland's gunner opened fire and immediately jammed. Something that was to happen often this game. Lothar, in his yellow triplane, joined the fray firing at both SPADs and taking fire back. Eventually everyone got every close.... except for Udet who couldn't seem to play the right cards. We were honestly lucky to avoid a collision here.

Udet flies the wrong way, meanwhile a melee ensues

Rickenbacker and Cook split up. Rickenbacker gives chase to the Roland, while Cook attempts to hold the enemy scouts (Udet finally having found the battle) off in his lightning painted SPAD. Cook and the German scouts exchange fire for a few turns. However, just when things are looking up for Cook, Lorthar pulls and Immelmann and sprays his machine with bullets. Cook explodes.

    Cook's Fate
Meanwhile, Rickenbacker's chase of the Roland is proving successful. The rear gun has jammed again (on its first turn being un-jammed), and he has jammed its rudder and the Roland has started to smoke. The Roland does however make a successful photo run, and now starts running home with its precious photos. Rickenbacker is forced to turn off to engage Lothar and Udet.

    Photo taken, heading for home.
Rickenbacker and the German scouts exchange fire, Rickenbacker normally being on the receiving end. Luckily for him however, he takes almost no damage. The Roland and Albatross soon get in each other's way.

Collide? Easy, we'll just take no damage.
The rest of the was basically us just misjudging our opponent's and turning the wrong way. There wasn't any more serious combat... although the Roland jammed its gun firing at Rickenbacker again...
Eventually Rickenbacker flew off the table (I misjudged how sharp, or rather not, the turns were), and the Germans claimed victory. Lothar claimed one kill, his brother's machine had taken recon photos, and Udet had mostly avoided combat.

Yeah, we both haven't played the game in ages, so we were a bit shaky with remembering how well, or unwell, our aircraft maneuvered. The first game we played today had a few collisions as well.

My kids "forced" my mother (80 years old) to play a game a few years back. Lets say she did not fully grasp the "card maneuvering thing"
She went of picking flowers most of the game. We still laugh about it

    Great AAR Ash

This looks like great fun Ash - thank you for posting

If it is any consolation 9,445 Nautical Miles away BoOm CaRdS have been plaguing a number of my recent games too! The one I was most gutted about was incurred by a Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX (WGS) in a game where it had just had it's rudder jammed both ways: Only ever seen this once before in my Wings of Glory playing career and this was during a Solitaire game - but this Spitfire was being flown by a live opponent!

Now being a real life pilot I have figured out how you are able to continue playing despite a total rudder jam and with the limited options which are still available ... My ideology would probably work with WGF too - Interesting to find out.

A nice little game there Ash. To cut down the number of collisions many players have decided that a collision should only only occur if the model's bases overlap to the extent that one model's base overlaps the others peg. This way planes can overlap without collision but collisions can still occur.

Yeah, that's the rules I play with as well...

I require both planes pegs to overlap their opponent's base - this makes collisions slightly less common than for just a single peg/base overlap.

    Super AAR action

I find photo recon runs in WOG just as deadly

I was escorting an American Airco DH.4 (50th Squadron AEF) with a SPAD XIII René Fonck (France) on a photo recon run.

My girlfriend was flying the Airco and successfully photographed the German air base.

I took the heat until she was able to get back over friendly ground, but I had to limp back to base (I was accustomed to landing without a complete rudder )

Thanks for the action and pictures
