The fourth sortie between the German air force and the English/allied mob took place.
The aim of the mission was to destroy an allied observation balloon that was passing on German field positions to the allied artillery.
Local intelligence reports that one observer has been injured in an accident and is not able to assist his companion.
German ace Von Hipple was given the task in a solo mission (or maybe that is he should have flown so lo they could not hit him) as Art Johnson would say in rowan and martins laugh in "Very interesting and very funny (German accent). Anyway his Albatros was loaded with incendiary rounds (and a bottle of some fine schnapps). and away he went.
Now let the pictures tell the story.
Von Hipple sets off on his mission using heavy cloud as cover.
Once Von Hipple breaks cover he is spotted by a patrolling English Camel.
On the attack
overhead view of the approach
Straight away the camel gets on the back of Von Hipples Albatross in the ensuing round of fire Von Hipple sustains temporary damage and is unable to carry out left hand manoeuvres
Undeterred the intrepid Von Hipple continues and attacks the balloon inflicting serious damage.

At that moment the Camel for some reason overshoots Von Hipple allowing Von Hipple to take evasive action
The camel has gone off course avoiding the flaming balloon this allows Von Hipple to evade and re-position himself for another attack

In the heat of a dog fight a small collision happens
Having carried out an Immelmann turn Von nipple has edged closer to the balloon but the camel is back on course for another run.
During the second attack Von Hipple inflicts more damage on the balloon
Further damage to the balloon and to Von Hipple the camel has caused engine damage this time Von Hipple cannot carry out right turns and is hit by flak
The damage was terminal but Von Hipple survives the crash and is captured the English Tommies
The damage to the balloon was to severe and the winch men failed to bring it down in time.
Later in the English officers mess Von Hipple carries on the attack and downs a spitfire
Foot note latest reports show that Von Hipple was handed over to the French who then through some lax in security allowed Von Hipple to escape he made it back over the German lines and is reported to be resting with a German wench called Broomhilda.
