Thread: Dragon Hunt 1918 at NOWSCon, Ohio, 24-OCT-15

  1. #1

Default Dragon Hunt 1918 at NOWSCon, Ohio, 24-OCT-15

I ran this game at the Northern Ohio Wargamers Society annual con at Sheffield Lake, Ohio yesterday. No 'drome members were there (Kenneth?), but a couple of them play the game regularly. (one, Paul, was running a WGF on Sunday).
I had 6 players, 3 CP, and 3 Entente, setting up at opposite ends of the mat. 2 Dragons were in the middle; they are from the D&D Attack Wing starter set. I used their movement templates, limiting them to 1,2 and 3 (they go up to 5), and made a deck of cards to plot their movement with. Many of the rules here were inspired by an AAR from John (jbmacek) found here:
    http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/sho...sual-Encounter
The dragons had the following rules:
    Hits were 40 points.
They plotted their moves as in the WGS game, that is, 2 cards being refreshed each play. This was to give them a flexibility advantage.
The dragons could breath fire through their front arc for C damage (2 cards for short, 1 card for long). They then received 3 jam tokens to represent recharging.
If any aircraft overlapped a dragon in the front arc, they could be bitten/clawed for 2 A damage (the dragon can't breath in the same phase as biting).
If any aircraft overlapped a dragon in the rear arc, they could be tail-smacked for 2 B damage.
When a dragon has taken half damage (20 points), it can no longer move 3, make 90 degree turns, or Immelmann.
When a dragon has taken 3/4 damage (30 points), it can no longer breath fire.

Typically, I forgot to get a picture of the setup. Each dragon veered off towards the opposite ends of the mat.
A couple of setup turns, and the first shot: and of course, the BOOM! card: (15 points on the dragon; same way I play it with the Gothas):

Everyone had a good time, and I learned some things to modify for the next time.

Nice. I had just ordered a couple of these dragons thinking something similar. I'll definitely give your and John's mods a try.

This looks great, Karl! I look forward to seeing it in person...

Can you post specifics on the dragons you used - perhaps price and order # info - I haven't seen the D&D line of dragons at the FLGS - will have to see if they have anything similar...

    All the best,

Thanks Matt; maybe you can help me run it at Origins?
The dragons are from the D&D Assault Wing basic starter set from WizKidds games, and I used other elements of that game in this. I'll post more details in a thread in the mission sub-forum later this week.

I'd be happy to help with it at Origins, Karl

I shall have to check the FLGS for the Attack Wing stuff this Wednesday - we have our bi-weekly Paint Night from 7 to 9, followed by chow at one of the local pubs. I'll let you know what I find - I really love this scenario...

    Hey, Karl,

My one FLGS only had the large Bahomat (sp?) dragon for $50+...so I didn't jump for it...I'll check the other FLGS this weekend...

Do the dragons come with movement cards, or are you using spare WOG decks to move them?

I have some ideas for repainting these little beasties, and I definitely think you've inspired me to pick up a couple or three...

    All the best,

I think that, if you want, great pre-painted dragons can be found for cheaper, and then you can use existing bases and decks.
This is what I am doing with the 1/241 Revell Millennium Falcon, just to say...

    Matt;
Just like WoG, each dragon comes with a set of movement templates. It isn't cards like WoG, but the move choice is done with a dial, like WizKids clicks. I'm doing a writeup this weekend, with pictures.
I'm sure I'll be picking up some more, and repainting with national colours sounds like fun. Maybe expand to dragon vs. dragon combat..........oh dear

I was lucky to grab the starter set on sale here in my FGS rebel.pl for 29$. For the whole stuff and 3 big dragons - it's a real bargain.

A PC10/CDL dragon against a hexagonal lozenge (bomber camo) colored dragon, perhaps? Perhaps the PC10 dragon would have "Spirit of St. George" written on his side...

Well, Karl, my FLGS wasn't too friendly with the price of the basic set - they wanted $39.99, and I'm sure I can get it cheaper online somewhere...but I did succumb to temptation and pick up this lovely beastie...

You're right, of course, David! For a golden dragon, he looks lovely

I'm just the sort who has to fiddle with things...and while I do like the colors, I'm thinking I may want something a little less spectacular attacking my little planes...it's a pretty dynamic figure, and the sculpting is pretty nice - I think it would paint up nicely and some of the detail would show better if it were a different color...

And I'm not planning of having lots of dragons, just a couple; so taking some extra effort and time on 'em to make 'em 'pop' doesn't seem overly out of place to me.

The guys in my local miniatures painting group would attest that I have difficulty leaving well enough alone...

I'll let you all know what I decide.

    All the best,
    Matt

The rules that Karl posted at the beginning of the thread are essentially what he used at Origins this last summer, Neil (and Mike)...I helped him in the game by maneuvering the dragons for him. As I recall he had the damage points for the dragons at 45 instead of 40 - I think because he had Snipes and DVIIs as the enemy planes, he wanted the dragons to be a little 'tougher'...

For movement the dragons use the movement templates that come with the D&D Attack Wing basic set - he used the 1, 2, and 3 sets, and then modified them for the damage he mentions above. The movement dials were also used for the dragons (similar to those used in the X-Wing game), to set the movement. I seem to remember each dragon had two maneuver dials to allow the 'plotting' to respond quicker than the three-card WW1 movement plotting for the planes...

He also had a homemade fire-breath template he used to determine if a dragon's breath hit a plane...I have a PM in to him about its dimensions, but he hasn't gotten back yet - I know he's busy with his wife's illness. I hope to see him this weekend in Columbus at a game and will find out more about finalization of rules...

It really is a lot of fun and is quite an attention-grabber!

    All the best,
    Matt

THE JANUARY NOWS MINICON IS CANCELED.

This Minicon was scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017 in Berea, Ohio.
The furnace at St Thomas Episcopal Church has failed. The room for The NOWS Minicon, which was scheduled for this coming Saturday January 28, is without heat and is coated with soot, rust and other debris. We will endeavor to reschedule this event if possible, otherwise we're looking at the next Minicon being scheduled in March.
