I ran this game at the Northern Ohio Wargamers Society annual con at Sheffield Lake, Ohio yesterday. No 'drome members were there (Kenneth?), but a couple of them play the game regularly. (one, Paul, was running a WGF on Sunday).
I had 6 players, 3 CP, and 3 Entente, setting up at opposite ends of the mat. 2 Dragons were in the middle; they are from the D&D Attack Wing starter set. I used their movement templates, limiting them to 1,2 and 3 (they go up to 5), and made a deck of cards to plot their movement with. Many of the rules here were inspired by an AAR from John (jbmacek) found here:
http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/sho...sual-Encounter
The dragons had the following rules:
Hits were 40 points.
They plotted their moves as in the WGS game, that is, 2 cards being refreshed each play. This was to give them a flexibility advantage.
The dragons could breath fire through their front arc for C damage (2 cards for short, 1 card for long). They then received 3 jam tokens to represent recharging.
If any aircraft overlapped a dragon in the front arc, they could be bitten/clawed for 2 A damage (the dragon can't breath in the same phase as biting).
If any aircraft overlapped a dragon in the rear arc, they could be tail-smacked for 2 B damage.
When a dragon has taken half damage (20 points), it can no longer move 3, make 90 degree turns, or Immelmann.
When a dragon has taken 3/4 damage (30 points), it can no longer breath fire.
Typically, I forgot to get a picture of the setup. Each dragon veered off towards the opposite ends of the mat.
A couple of setup turns, and the first shot: and of course, the BOOM! card: (15 points on the dragon; same way I play it with the Gothas):
Not deterred by this crippling shot, big Red dives into the middle of the Se.5as:
And ends up crunching one:
Then whips around, and takes a long range breath at Troy:
Then we had a tail chase:
Which got big Red in a crossfire:
Meanwhile, at the other end, big Blue and the CP boys swirling about indecisively, until the Baron came on (late starting player), and drew first (blue)blood:
The dragons finally decided to come back together, at which point, Dallas(Paul) remembered "roundels good; iron crosses bad":
After a bit of dodging Spandau fire, Dallas turns, and finds big Red in a bad mood; he was too busy getting a face full of flame to aim well, and :
A couple turns later, Paul's back with a Snipe, and gets Red in his sights:
Back to Blue: caught without a charged flamethrower, Anthony gets some more hits in:
(The C decks were throwing up a lot of 0s.)
One last burst, and Udet (Jeff) brings down big Red (note: probably a case of dragon poaching, as most of the damage was done by Paul):
One proud dragon slayer:
Back to Blue: crippled, and trapped, Blue slides off along the matt edge; everyone else suddenly notices enemy aircraft, and a melee occurs:
And Blue makes his escape:
Paul reverses back to catch the beast, but gets too close, and CRUNCH!:
Big Blue dines on Sopwith Snipe!:
Times running out, and Blue is escaping, but there's always time to take a potshot at an Se.5a...and what a shot!:
Score was dragons: 3 planes, CP: 1 dragon and 1 plane, Entente: lots of losses
Everyone had a good time, and I learned some things to modify for the next time.
