Thread: Official Nieuport 24 Painting Thread

  1. #1

Default Official Nieuport 24 Painting Thread

Let me start a new thread in the showcase, devoted to Nieuport 24's, another evolved version of the famous N17, so to say.
These are Shapeways WSF models of the 24bis (has the N.17 tail fin) B gun version.
Since my Dolphins in Polish service (http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/sho...ainting-thread) need some opponents to clash with in the air battles over Warsaw 1920, I decided to paint and decal them in some more or less historical Soviet schemes. Overall silver with coloured fins/rudders to make them easier to recognize on the table, plus some historical individual markings. Such types were used by the Soviets during battle of Warsaw in August 1920. Stats: F/B/13. Card design provided by Guntruck (Steve - thank you!).

Ladies and Gents: let's unleash the red horde!

    Default Nieuport 24

Here are a trio of N24s I just finished. Models are Shapeways, designed by Daryl (RAF) can be seen HERE.

Paint is Vallejo Air Aluminum. Various Vallejo and craft paints for tires, struts and tail. Decals, roundels are old sets from Dom. The numbers and insignia are made by myself.

Sadly the digital photos do what they do and make them look very grainy. They look much better in person.

    Unit is N94.

1st up is Sous Lt. Alexandre Ottavy

Using a card design by Guntruck that I found in the Wings of Linen wiki, I added the numbers on the wings and fuselage using the font that Peter intended to use for his decals. You can see that the numbers are different from the photographs above.

F deck is too fast for these but they D* deck adopted for the Pup would suit your needs, same moves at slower speed.

I've made a modified I deck for these. Basically a slower F deck.

That's exactly what the D* deck is - move for move !
I expect your modified I deck comes out the same

    Deck D* (22) – Average speed - 3.5cm - (arrow is 50% of the card)
    3 straight
    1 hard right turn (90°)
    1 hard left turn (90°)
    3 right turn
    3 left turn
    2 stall - steep
    1 Immelmann !
    2 right sideslip
    2 left sideslip
1 broad right sideslip - steep
1 broad left sideslip - steep
    1 climb
    1 dive

I'll have to ask Karl about this. I gave it the 90* R&L and the very wide side slips like the F deck has. Maybe the wider slips are too much?

Not really, it's supposed to be agile and the wider slips of the D deck are only the width of the card, not the length as in the F deck.
I suspect it was given that deck for the moves because there was nothing official to match it in the slower band at the time.

I would second Dave's choice: the D* deck suits the N.24.

Yes, the D is the same speed as the I, thats why I modified the I it to mimic the F.
